When did football last made you cry with joy (or despair)?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Football Fan Crying

Life. Love. Money. Sex. Power. Booze. Football.

The beautiful game has few rivals when it comes to weighing it’s importance. No surprise then that it evokes such strong emotions from its followers and turns rational, educated individuals into raging madmen.

It hit me, while I was watching Sunderland record a memorable last-gasp win over Tottenham, that surely there must be fans who would be moved to cry with joy (or despair) when a football match played out it’s final result.

The ‘99 or ‘05 Champions League finals. The ‘01 FA Cup final. The 2006 World Cup final.

History is littered with memorable and moving events for each club.

So today’s question is - when was the last time football made you cry with joy?

As a bonus, you can also tell when last football made you cry in despair.

Not sure if many people will answer this - it’s a shot in the dark and I know that a lot of people don’t want to talk about it, but hey, football does that to us.

  1. when united loss to milan in the cl semi finals,

  2. When Bury got thrown out of the F.A. Cup last season on a paperwork technicality that wasn’t our fault… oh, and every England penalty shoot-out for the past six major tournaments :(

  3. 1) When England lost to Portugal

    2) When Italy won the World Cup (that was quite something…)

    3) When United scored the 3rd and 4th goal against Fulham on the opening day last season.

    4) When Sunderland beat Spurs :)

    5) The Milan loss, probably, but I had given up on that game in the first half and was more angry than sad.

has been more than once, but the last time…it was the time MU were scoring goal after goal against the “mighty” ROMA team in the 7-1 victory

  5. Cry for despair:
When Argentina lost to West Germany in the 1990 world cup final. I was 9. Piss off.

    Cry for Joy (well almost):
When Trinidad & Tobago beat Bahrain to get to their first World Cup in 2006.

Wanted to take an atomic bomb to England:
When Peter Crouch pulled Brent Sancho’s (our defender) hair back to score the first goal after we held out against England for 83 minutes.

  6. Crying for joy, it was United’s superb fight back against Everton, especially when I learned of Chelsea’s results.

Crying for despair, it was when United went out of the group stages of the CL two seasons back.

Despair - Milan game. Both upset than sad.
Upset - Pool’s comeback against Milan (reason I was upset was because I kinda prayed for them (not to get humiliated) at half-time)

  16. Karl - you should never pray for Liverpool to not get humiliated - how else are we going to make fun of them?

  17. Saddest Moment, Last game at Highbury, Being only 13 and knowing I would never see a game let alone the Whole stadium in one peice made me cry, the way Thierry kissed the turf, Amazing!

Unbeaten season was awesome, Beating Villareal at last Euro game at Highbury thanks to Lehmanns spot, Being a Gooner too many to list1

  21. August 16, 2007 Liverpool_Fan

    Joy:
    T&T qualified
    Portugal beat England
And Italy winning world cup (i was wierdly happy)

  25. August 17, 2007 Liverpool_Fan

    well i was only 4 in 1996 so i cant remember :)

  26. I’ve only cried three times for football, once was in 1996, I was four years old and Gareth Southgate was a cunt.
[England - Germany EURO '96 for those who don't know.]

Then again in 2000, European Cup final, France - Italy which fueled my hatred for Arsenal even more. [Wiltord, Henry]

Another time was Man Utd - Porto 03/04.
1st leg Porto 2-1 Man Utd
2nd leg Man Utd 1-1 Porto, with a last minute goal. [Man Utd would have gone through on away goals].
Porto won the tournament that year after meeting Lyon, Deportivo La Coruna and Monaco. We really could have done it, we were closer that year than in any other year since 99 IMO.

Never cried for joy for football, I went close on a few occasions.
    Italy - France ‘06
Man Utd - Bayern Munich ‘99
    Man Utd - Roma ‘07.

[I'm half italian, half english by the way.]

  27. In recent time….It’s got to be Italy v Germany 2006 when Grosso scored in extra time when he did Tardelli’s famous celebration.

I think I was crying in despair like in the 85 minute when Man Utd played Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in 99, but then i was Crying for joy in stoppage time :D

  28. January 11, 2008 Callum Sutton
