What to do with Liverpool FC (and Rafa)?

It was the best of times, it is the worst of times now for Liverpool fans – of that there can be no doubt. Looking back briefly to last season when Rafa Benitez’s side lead Manchester United in the Premier League by nearly double digits, this was going to be the year that finally ended Liverpool fans long wait for the biggest domestic prize.

But alas one ‘fact’ related rant later and a few shaky results left Liverpool finishing second to United even after an impressive string of results to round off the season. I noticed a shift in mood from Liverpool fans over the second half of that campaign, one that began with winning the league was expected as a minimum requirement from such a strong position, too finishing second is ok because next year we’ll do it…

In taking a step back to look at the situation objectively, the reign of Rafa Benitez can almost be defined by the caption ‘next year we’ll be champions’. This is not to say that over the last five years Rafa has not won trophies, not least of which the dramatic Champions League comeback against Milan, but that was some time ago now. In hindsight that win has been Rafa’s saving grace as I’m convinced had Milan done what the laws of physics would suggest from a ‘three goals to the good’ position at half time; Liverpool would have a different manager today.

Liverpool fans have gone through the emotional rollercoaster of believing last term that the league title was truly in sight, only then to lose out to bitter rivals United. It was then expected that the side would kick on and go one better this term finishing top of the Premier League; on the basis of what we have seen from Liverpool so far this season – not so much.

I do not need to reel off the facts, but Liverpool have started dreadfully this campaign, seven wins and six losses is hardly the form of potential champions let alone a side with realistic ambitions of qualifying for the Champion’s League next term. In short Liverpool now enter a three to five game series that may well prove to shape the future of the club as we now know it. This may at first sound melodramatic but a loss to Man United at the weekend and failure to qualify out of the group stages in the Champions League would surely have to lead to a change of manager.

Going one step further this could also have potential ramifications for the financial stability and ownership structure of the club. The Premier League is more competitive this year than ever, and to think Liverpool may have lost five games before the end of October has to leave doubts as to their ability to retain a top four finish. With Man United and Chelsea dead certs to finish in two of the Champions League slots, that leaves Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Tottenham and even Villa to battle for the final two. From a Teesside perspective it does not bear thinking about. The financial implications again could be crippling for a club that has cash flow issues and board squabbles to deal with as it is.

The final element to this equation lies in the UEFA seeding list coefficient. Next time around Liverpool’s Champions League win comes off the coefficient calculation, and if this was to be replaced with a ‘did not get out of the group phase’, followed by a Europa League campaign, Liverpool’s status as a number one seed would also be at risk.

Although Liverpool aren’t in a good spot, it’s not the end of the world for the team today and they can still influence what happens tomorrow, but there can be no denying that there is an element of peering over the abyss to the current predicament. Things can and will go one of two ways, for Liverpool’s sake I hope Gerrard and Torres develop some super human powers of recovery and endurance or it could be all change in the red half of the city come January.

Comments:

  1. They should sack him, the team needs a fresh approach. Being a Man Utd fan I hope that never happends, though. With Rafa in charge Liverpool won’t win the league never ever in the history of the Universe.

Interesting that Liverpool fans (on the Blogs today) are turning on Rafa big time. I said in a recent article that it would be the fans who determine his survival, and right now he’s under severe pressure.

But would it be a good thing to sack him now? He may resign if he knows he’s lost the fans support but who can Liverpool get at this stage of the season?

I believe that they are better keeping him for now…..but if the dam bursts with the supporters that may not be possible. The Utd game on Sunday is now a huge game for Rafa.

But the last time he lost the fans (briefly) after the Boro defeat last season, the team went into a purple patch, including beating Utd 4-1.

Can Lazarus rise again? If not I think he will deservedly carry the can for failure on a number of fronts.

yes it is time for rafa to go with all due respect he has been given enough time and has not delivered, there is just something missing in his make up, he has sold players who now not only are scoring at club level but also international level, he still keeps faith with players who to be honest would only make decent championship players, the bottom line is that he just is not tactacly a a/venga or a alex ferg.change is needed we need to bring back the players who want to play for the shirt and not the pay cheque.

just sack him please!!! 4 losses in a row is completly unacceptable. 2 trophies in 5 seasons??? That tells you everything. For us to win the league he needs 2 go NOW!

The time for Rafa to go was at the end of last season and now we have lost Alonso – the architect of Liverpools success last season – had the club made the decision when we gifted Man U the title, we would not be where we are right now. We can not rely on just 2 players to get us through a season. Rafa has not proved he knows what he is doing in the transfer market. Last night was the last straw for many a Red when on came Voronin! Most fans would give him and Dossena a free lift out of the city almost anywhere but Rafa sticks with and its beyond us why! Babel, more than capable of a game sat on the bench and probably wondered why too! He should have started. Its beyond a joke now and needs to be sorted before we totally lose the plot like the Manager himself. YNWA

rafa is a good coach.I was on z top of z world wen he beat man united last season.the reason for our bad times is because gillete & hick is not giving him enough money.trere is only 1 rule good player are not cheep

How can rafa inprove a team with no money UTD, chelsea an city have all spent lots of money. rafa has bought alot of young players for the future in but the overall team is not good enough, i think rafa has done a good job but its time for new thinking, a different approch and NEW OWNERS!!.

Sacking Rafa is not the answer. With Gerrard and Torres both out the team is so so to say the least, the ownership is useless and Rafa seems to be doing the best he can with the bad hand he’s been dealt.

I honestly believe that sacking Rafa would be our equivalent of Newcastle sacking Bobby Robson. It might be viewed as the correct decision for a month, maybe two, but in four years after going through four managers as we linger in mid-table no one will be in any doubt it was the wrong decision.

Rafa should at a bare minimum be given until January, a new manager couldn’t bring in flesh blood until then, and no new manager could do any better with this current squad than Rafa until then.

  2. the reign of Rafa Benitez can almost be defined by the caption ‘next year we’ll be champions’.

Rather: ‘Next year one of those 75+ buys will be golden. No, no one will know the player either and I’ll certainly pay over the odds’.

only problem is, u cant afford to sack him, your club is struggling financially and the fat spanish waiter only recently signed a new five year contract. But I’m not complaining, thats one less team challenging us for our title.

Clearly Liverpool fans are divided based on the above comments.

Which way it swings may be determined on Sunday. Win, and some who have lost faith will bounce back. Lose and it will be the other way around.

Personally I hope he goes as he has us playing the worst style of football in the league. It is ugly to watch, and the man just is not tactically smart enuf to turn it around. Sure he has fooled a lot into thinking he is a genius, but he has been thoroughly exposed as being well below par when it comes to managing a top side. Who can we get to replace him? Maybe riejcard, or kenny as care taker, I’m not that fused. I just want to see pool playing a good brand of footy, and send lucas the hobbit for a burton as well

Well, his tactics seems to be working very well for Torres and Gerrard is it not? Both of them seem to be scoring all your goals last season. But then again, they were always good. Pity Torres did not come to Man Utd.

And to those that say Liverpool isn’t spending enough money.

Well United came to Anfield yesterday – any comments?

    • Comment by: Jofrad

I agree with Sir Alex it was all the referee’s fault !
If B D Condell thinks Liverpool fans are fickle he should try reading the blogs about United on the Manchester Evening News website.
I’ll say it again – the source of all Liverpool’s problems is Hicks and Gillett.
