After seven qualifiers, England are within touching distance of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Having seen how things have gone thus far, there’s 16 players I think England should definitely bring to the tournament:
GK: James
DF: Terry, R. Ferdinand, A. Cole, Bridge, Lescott
MF: Barry, Gerrard, Lampard, Walcott, Beckham, J. Cole, Carrick
FW: Rooney, Heskey, Defoe
Other possible players: G. Johnson, Upson, Downing, Wright-Phillips, Hargreaves, A. Young
I know Joe Cole’s been injured for much of this year, but on his day, he’s good enough to challenge for the starting XI. Glen Johnson has started most of this campaign as right-back, but he still hasn’t fully proved himself, so for now he’s not irreplacable. Out of the four possible midfielders, I think England’s only got room for one more, as we’ll need five strikers and three GKs. It’s difficult deciding who: we have enough left-mids, so I’d rule out Young and Downing, so for me it’s between Wright-Phillips and Hargreaves.
England’s other strikers and goalkeepers haven’t proved themselves yet, so they’ll need a good year to get those final places. Also, England’s right-back role is up for grabs, so if Johnson doesn’t play well this year, he could be replaced by Brown, Gary Neville or Richards.
Whatever happens, I’m sure Capello will make the right choice.

Great formation overall.

Putting Lamps on the bench is right, Lamps and Gerrard are getting into each other’s way now and i do not forsee the situation improving in 2010. If one is playing, the other got to be benched and i will field Gerrard in the first XI anytime.

I would also prefer to start with Lennon than to use Walcott on the right.

I think Carson is a better keeper than Foster. Also, why has everyon forgotten about Owen? He’s only gonna be 30 in 2010…

yeah i agree with sam, i was gunna say it’ll probably look quite similar to today’s side – the squad may have changed a lot though.
