What did Arsenal ever do to you, Reyes?

Mr Reyes is not only homesick, apparently he’s jealous of Ashley Cole and William Gallas in hogging the headlines for demanding transfers.

I mean - we know you don’t like to play in England, we know that you want to go to Spain, we get it.

Do you have to give desperate interviews to Spanish newspapers again and again and again?

Now in all fairness, this could be taken out of context. Reyes has made it a clear point that he’s happy with Arsenal and that his problems lie with his desire to go back home - he can’t settle in the English culture, that’s understandable and at his age (22) predictable as well. I suppose he could have tried a bit hader to fit in (and I’m sure that Arsenal as a club and his Arsenal team mates did their best to help him fit in, but if he’s not happy he’s not happy, what can you do about it?

Real Madrid should eventually come in and end his misery by paying Arsenal a bit less than what they want and more than what was originally offered. And the mystery - of why a player who has been supposedly given everything by Arsenal is so adamant for a move - will remain unclear. Would it have helped if Arsenal had won the Champions League?

Reyes is in his rights to want to move, but one, why the hell did you come to England then, and two, this really isn’t the way to go about a transfer mate.

Steven Naismith is going to be at Ashburton Grove for a couple of days - should be good experience for the kid and who knows, he could turn out to be a star for Arsenal.

In the last week Arsenal have been linked with Corinthians’ midfielder Javier Mascherano (a player they have been following since his River Plate days from where they reportedly tried and failed to sign him) and also with West Ham captain Nigel Reo-Coker.

Ashley Cole has told Wenger that he’d be happy to stay and work things out at Arsenal. The considerate chap (or cheeky ******, take your pick).

Rocky covers the Man City vs Arsenal game and asks a very pertinent question:

Why won’t they shoot?

I think Reyes wants to leave because he was snubbed in the Champions League final. He was one of the biggest reasons we got to the final…yet come final time, Wenger went with Pires as his going away gift. He screwed us as Reyes was having a great end to the season and played a pivotal part in us beating the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

A major snub from Wenger which has upset Reyes so much that he doesn’t feel he’s valued enough here anymore by le Boss.

    Such a shame. He’s a terrific player.

  2. ^^^^ Wildest of wild speculation. If that really is the case, then he isn’t mentally strong enough to be a professional footballer. Though I doubt the above story has any credibility.

Ahmed, Reyes has wanted to leave well before we got to the Champions League final. Sadly, this is a case of cultural incompatibility, nothing else.

He’s annoying me now with the 4 daily interviews, though.

  3. WHAT? Terrific player????

I rate him as the predictable, naive and ultimately, a ball loser. He gave away possession far too easily because he is toooooooooooooooo predictable.

For goodness sake let him go, let him drag the REAL Mad down. No sympanthy for him, I am not gonna miss him.

I’m as annoyed about this as everybody else - particularly as he signed an extension to his contract last season! If he was n’t enjoying himself - why do that?

Other annoying feature is that with both Reyes and Cole, its dragging on and leaves us little or no time to sign replacements before the window closes.

  5. It is possible that there is some credence in what you say but the real problem stems from when we signed Reyes from Sevilla, Wenger made a big mistake ! To bring his family, dog and ali-oli was wrong and I hope the lesson has been learnt, he was NEVER going to fit-in,let him run back to Spain a losser. Cesc did not have the same problems and has fitted in well,is a credit to Wenger, Arsenal and Spain,we only want winners so f*** off Reyes.

I think everyone is missing the point about Reyes. I believe Reyes was secretly hoping that TH would not sign another contract with Arsenal. Reyes does not fancy another miserable year playing with TH. Henry’s attitude towards Reyes is despicable, especially as the captain. The kid is scared of TH, and cannot play another season of mistreatment and hate from TH.
    Mr. Wenger should have intervened!

  7. Nana Bonsu - anything you got to back your claim up?
  8. Interesting points all along. And the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. However, Nana Bonsu makes an interesting point about the role of Henry in this saga. And it would be naive to dismiss it as pure nonsense.

Surely, everyone has noticed Henry’s poutiness and often disinterested attitude. (Please do not crucify me for saying anything slightly critical of Henry). But, it is interesting how Henry has never looked to Reyes as his first passing option, and surely everyone must have noticed the countless glances of dissaproval from Henry towards the Spaniard whenever anything has gone wrong. To me it also seems as there has been tension, which does not in any way justify Reyes’ approach to this transfer saga. It could have been handled more delicately.

But everyone notice this, Arsenal for all its beauty, purity and integrity (all of the elements that make me love the club), has a dark side. An element that creates tension between players Ie. Wiltord, Edu, Pires, Campbell, of course Cole and even Vieira. So there is beneath the surface in this club and it is clear that there are many power struggles which the public never sees.

With regards to Henry, I am bewildered by his mesmerising ability, but I reserve my right as a thinking human being to disagree with the God-like status placed on him. Here is something which might have me crucified by all fellow Arsenal supporters…but he is no Tony Adams or Roy Keane. He will never die for the club and he plays (it seems to me for himself whenever he feels like it). They did it, every time they stepped on the pitch.

This is only my opinion and I could be wrong. And remember I only critisize because I care about Arsenal. Individual players are fine but at the end it is Arsenal I support and not Thierry Henry.

Now let us get this stadium on the road with the usual Boro thrashing!

    With football optimism.

  9. Gus J, I know you’ll probably get a lot of shit for this, but I really do agree with you on Henry - he’s a sublime performer AND a team player, but his drive seems to come from somewhere else. Fair enough - but it’s disturbing still.

About TH and Reyes - and I know NOTHING about it - Michael Jordan was (in)famous for the treatment he accorded rookies, and this is the first thing it reminded me of. Here’s hoping it’s not true.

Gus J. Thanks a lot for your comments. I couldn’t have articulated it better.

Hasan, your point is well taken, although Reyes has not been the only rookie at Arsenal.
