West Ham will be a bad move for Reading’s Shorey
The Beeb reports that West Ham have made a 5m bid for Reading left-back Nicky Shorey. Shorey’s a good player and West Ham will improve thanks to him, but I don’t think that moving to West Ham would turn into a good career move for Shorey.
This has nothing to do with whether I like West Ham or not (so don’t go there – I like the Hammers); on the other hand it’s all about the West Ham manager and the squad currently assembled at West Ham.
I don’t think Curbishley has it in him to make West Ham into a consistent top-7 side. He could take West Ham to Uefa Cup football in one season but over the long run, all Curbishley can do is stabilize West Ham and turn them into a promising but under-achieving mid-table side.
The West Ham squad is perhaps good enough to be playing in Europe right now, but they need a lot of playing time together and without a good manager, there’s no point to it, is there?
Shorey would be better off staying at Reading for another season and then deciding on his future next summer – or if he must move, he should aim for a move to Newcastle – a club that needs a left-back, have a better manager and definitely one that has more chances of making the top 7 than West Ham.

Football is indeed a game of opinions, so forgive me if I do not agree with your comments. WH have every bit as good a squad as Newcastle and have as much chance of finishing in a UEFA spot as they do. As regarding Managers I think we’ll have to wait and see, but if AC doesn’t deliver expect Magnusson to bring in someone who will, sooner rather than later. The players are there that can do it consistently, we need a little more luck with injuries than we have had and that playing time together will happen. I do hope that we use the next couple of days well to ensure that Appiah, Shorey and a good striker are added to the team. COYI
August 29th, 2007 @ 18:33utter nonsense go to Newcastle and play Sam`s longball game or go to west ham and play football. Having read some of the other rubbish written by the author on West Ham this does not surprise me
August 29th, 2007 @ 18:42I agree with Tony, this is definately a bias author.
West Ham will offer him regular football played the right way and both would benifit to achieve a top 10 finish above Newcastle.
August 29th, 2007 @ 18:54Shorey’s a grown man, quite capable of reaching his own conclusions about where he wants to live and work for the next few years. None of us know what the guy wants out of life, so we’re hardly in a position either to advise him on his choices, or to criticise his decisions. If he decides he wants to play for West Ham, for whatever reason, perhaps even because he hails from that part of the world, and thinks he’ll fit in, then good luck to him.
August 29th, 2007 @ 18:54Why any player would want to play for any team except the MIGHTY REDS I do not know, GOOOOOO Manchester!!!
August 29th, 2007 @ 18:56Sorry but too many stupid articles have come from this site to take anything seriously here.
Newcastle has a better manager in Sam Allardyce? I dont think so and time will tell.
I also think that Shorey is not worth the valuation put on him and McCartney our current left back is just as good as him. If we get someone in they have to be better.
Curbs may not be the manager that takes us into the Champions League and turn us into a top performing side but he is stabilizing the team after a couple of difficult years. We have good management an excellent chairman and of course the best behaved fans in the world (when we win).
August 29th, 2007 @ 19:00Very unfair on Curbs. Alladyce is yet to prove that he can make the step up himself. He did a great job at Bolton , however the resources available to Bolton were more substantial than those at Charlton. The Tevez affair overshadowed the huge acheivement of avoiding relegation last season for West Ham. Curbs had to fight injury , uncertainty and a savaging by the press.
August 29th, 2007 @ 19:03I can’t see why Newcastle would be a better move for Shorey. He is a West ham supporter and will be aware of what is expected at West Ham and the area. He will be part of a strong defensive line and his England chances will not be weakened.
He will be much happier at West Ham, the shopping is fantastic!
August 29th, 2007 @ 23:39There’s Argos and Currys at Beckton and of course The Officers Club at Barking to kit himself out for those nights out in Ilford!
I don’t think West Ham OR Newcastle would be a good move for Shorey – he should stay at Reading, prove himself over a the next season (or two) and then wait for Man Utd to come calling.
Newcastle are a very average side, don’t believe the hype.
August 30th, 2007 @ 01:00IRONS
August 30th, 2007 @ 02:26If he went to either club, Nickey would regret it, it would be a bad move. West Ham and Newcastle are both shite clubs to go to, Reading are better than both.
