How can West Ham improve this summer?
As part of our 2006/2007 Premiership season-end review, here’s a look at how West Ham’s season went. Read up, then offer your own advice on how West Ham can improve this summer.
- Pre-season expectations: Like Wigan, there were high hopes for West Ham to build upon their FA Cup final appearance, and while the Tevez / Mascherano signings caused plenty of suspicion they also gave hope that West Ham could do as well as last season (which for a recently promoted club would have been fantastic).
- Season evaluation: Very disappointing, no fight and under-performing stars.
- The Big Negative: Team spirit?
- The Big Positive: Premiership survival, and Curbishley as West Ham manager.
- Summer Priority: To clear out the deadwood and rebuild for consolidation next season.
West Ham have Sheffield United and co on their backs regarding the Tevez case but other than that, they have the players, the money and the fan support to build for a long-term Premiership stay.
Now it’s your turn: How do you think West Ham can improve this summer?

May 31st, 2007 @ 21:19Hi,
I have a list of thngs on how West Ham can improve on their lap luster league postion last year. I am certain that it is all to do with who we can off-load and just as important who we can bring in. Curbs needs to spend big, but lets not forget we can get a few quid from players being sold as well
1. Alan Curbisley MUST clear out the following players.
1. Carrol
2. Dalliy
3. Pansil
4. Daveport
5. Lee Bowyer
6. Matt Etherington
7. Reo -Coker
8. Marlon Harewood
9. Kapa (currently on loan)
10. Teddy Sheringham (believe has already gone)
11. Anton Ferdinand (over rated and will only make things difficult because Curbs will not want to drop him and we have far better Centre backs than him! plus we can get at least 5 million from his sale!)
players we should be trying to bring in
1.Scott Parker (can replace NRC!)
2.Joey Barton (to fight out for a place with Noble)
3.Tim Cahill (to fight out for a place with Noble)
4.Darren Bent (to play upfront with Tevez if he stays)
5.Roberto Carlos (put in a bid! let it get rejected. but this will let people know we mean Business!)
6.Harry Kewell
remember we are trying to build so we will have to maybe spend big abroad rather than in England! this is where Alan Curbs is out of his depth! which is a problem! 15 million on a big name player that is what’s needed! like what Man United have just done.
so team could read…
1. R Green
2. L Neil
3. R Carlos
4. M Upson
5. D Gabbs/J Collins
6. Yossi Ben
7.J Barton
8.Scott Parker
9.H Kewell
10. C Tevez
11. D Ashton/ Darren Bent
or play with 3 in midfield and have the three upfront! that’s something for the defenders to think about! let me tell you
May 31st, 2007 @ 21:30West Ham could start by bringing Dean Ashton out of the closet. We’ve heard nought about him in ages. He hasn’t been mentioned in connection with the England squad recently and that’s what put him out of action in the first place, a year ago.
Is he still alive ?
May 31st, 2007 @ 21:57Can he walk ?
Will he ever play football again ?
Did West Ham have insurance protection against such a calamitous injury ?
Did they receive any compensation from the FA after the injury ?
Has Deano ever met Carlitos or Eggert (or Curbs for that matter) ?
I do believe the fans deserve regular updates on his status, condition and the likelyhood of him playing for the Hammers next season. Oh yes, and BTW, can I have his shirt if he isn’t going to use it again ?
I think that we need a few changes but not a massive amount are needed.
According to the papers, it sounds like Scott Parker is a done deal. He is capped at England and a proven leader and definately a step in the right direction.
Then there is speculation about Luke Young, again a good player and the sort that I think West Ham should be bringing in.
Everything that has been said about Carlos Tevez well on his effort and commitment I believe any club that gains him as a player will benefit greatly. For me, if ever West Ham were to table a large bid, he would be the player I think we should be going for though it is important not to forget that we also have Dean Ashton coming back soon and Bobby Zamora’s contributions should also not be forgotten.
The starting eleven I would like to see is.
1. R Green
2. L Neill/L Young
3. George McCartney (I think he played very well on the left and some of his forward runs created things)
4. M Upson (Avoiding injury, he looks to be a very good centre back)
5. D Gabbs/J Collins/A Ferdinand (Made mistakes but proved his worth near the end)
6. Yossi Benayoun
7. Mark Noble (His efforts were instrumental at the end of the season)
8. Scott Parker
9. Luis Boa Morte
10. C Tevez
11. D Ashton
Also possibly another good left-back and another decent striker though I am sure Curbs already has ideas on who he thinks will fit the bill.
May 31st, 2007 @ 22:18I would estimate £40 Million could get you this half decent team:
Green
May 31st, 2007 @ 23:47Neil
Ferdinand/Upson
Gabbidon/Collins
Nickey Shorey
Yossi
Parker
Noble
Joe Cole
Tevez
Ashton/Bent
so long as every one of our players realises that the name on the front of the shirt is more important than the name on the back and plays accordingly, i’ll be happy next season.
June 1st, 2007 @ 02:44Tevez! A full season will see around 20 goals and countless assists if his end of season form is anything to go by!
Ashton fit and fully recovered…
A new captain – Lucas Neill should fit the bill…
A continuation in the policy of buying leaders on the pitch such as Parker, Cahill etc
Give Noble a good run in the side, by christ hes earned it.
Greater strength in wide positions, both on the wing and full-back.
If we play like we did in the final two months for most or all of the season, top six is very much within our grasp
June 1st, 2007 @ 03:22fish

MD. yossi
ST. ashton
ST. zamora
What do you think???
June 1st, 2007 @ 17:25We defo need a left & right winger with pace and the ability to run at people. A good left back, putting in a cheeky bid for Bridge would be a good idea! Also a bid for Curtis Davis should be considered.
I think Barton is well over rated and a ego to boot so do we really need him… I think not! whos also suggesting Sicknote Kewell, hes never been the same since leaving Leeds so I really reaaally hope not. I thinnk Noble deserves a chance, he was great in the run up to the end of the season.
It would be good to see Bent come in and see Neill continue at right back with the Captains armband! It will be great seeing Ashton back too!
June 1st, 2007 @ 19:14My team if I could choose.
GK – Green (Stech and Walker backing up)

MF – Parker £7m (Backup Noble)

June 3rd, 2007 @ 07:05Some of you guys are off your rocker…
1. Cahill isn’t going to leave Everton to go to West Ham. It is very clearly a step downhill, he has a great relationship with the fans (which is one of Parker’s main problems at Newcastle, as well as his inability to settle up north) and has a lot of respect/loyalty for David Moyes.
2. Riquelme – are you having a laugh?? He rejected Man Utd last year in order to stay at Villareal, he loves the town, and feels a debt towards the club because of the poor season he has just had.
3. If you were to sign Marcelo, it’d most certainly be on loan. Real bought him for the future, to replace Carlos, in accordance with their current frenzied accrual of young players.
West Ham should certainly be ambitious, but why waste time being totally unrealistic?
June 3rd, 2007 @ 13:06well if riquelme loves the town why did he leave to go to boca juniors last january on loan. he has fallen out with the manager and is tevez’ best mate so could atrract him to the club. COME BACK WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT HUGO.
June 4th, 2007 @ 00:55He left to go to Boca initially to receive treatment, then because he was mildly homesick and was granted leave. He has stated on numerous occasions that he loves the town, and is indeed one of the few members of the team to reside in Villareal itself rather than in the wealthy suburbs. He also recognizes (and has done so publicly – see several interviews with Marca) the faith shown by Pellegrini, who really kickstarted his career after a nightmare spell with Barca.
Incidentally, that should be ‘Come back when you know what you’re talking about’, but orthographical errors are to be expected in a piece of senseless trash-talk. Your comment is the incarnation of the unreason which defines most football fans.
