Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is open to splash the cash in the January transfer window, if a top quality player becomes available.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion in the last league match. The result saw them drop down the table as they sit in fourth place with 26 points from 13 matches, two points behind league leaders Leicester City.

Wenger signed Petr Cech in the summer and the goalkeeper was the north London club’s addition, having moved to the Emirates from cross town rivals Chelsea. The Frenchman did not hesitate in signing Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in the last few transfer windows, who are the clubs two most expensive signings.

Arsenal manager admitted that he would not shy away in spending big, if a player he is looking for is made available in the transfer market.

“We are in a position where we want to do something. If I find the right quality I will do something,” Wenger said in his press conference, as reported by Sky Sports.

“Who doesn’t love a bargain? What is for us a bargain is to buy top quality as only top quality strengthens our squad.

“Patrick Vieira cost £2.5 million and was a top bargain, first of all because he was a top quality player. We spent £40 million on Ozil and I still consider it a bargain because we got a top quality player.”

Arsenal need a top quality defensive midfielder in order to give their centre-backs more protection. Francis Coquelin picked up an injury in his side’s defeat to West Brom and the 24-year-old could be out of action until the start of the New Year.

In his absence, Wenger has fielded his compatriot Mathieu Flamini in the defensive midfield position, alongside Santi Cazorla. The return of Aaron Ramsey could give the Gunners boss more options, especially in the absence of Coquelin and his captain Mikel Arteta.

A midfielder signing will boost Arsenal’s chances of winning the league this season as they are one of the clubs challenging for the title.
