Wenger confident Arsenal star will sign a new contract
Arsene Wenger is pretty relaxed with the contract situation of German defender Per Mertesacker insisting talks have been going on with the central defender, over the contract extension.
The tall towering defender joined the Gunners in 2011 from Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen and established himself as the first choice defender at the London club. Wenger has deployed Mertesacker and Koscielny as the primary centre-back pair at the club, forcing club skipper Thomas Vermaelen to warm the bench.
While everyone is thrilled with the attacking threat of the Gunners, especially after the arrival of Mesut Ozil, but one must not forget the defensive stability Mertesacker has provided this season. The Gunners have just conceded 10 goals and boast of having the third best defence in the league.
There were reports that Bayern Munich are interested in the German defender in the next transfer window and Wenger doesn’t want to take any risk about it.
“We are in the process of talking [with Mertesacker], yes,’ said Wenger. He has one and a half years to go on his current contract, so that is a long time.”
Arsenal are keen to push the paper work at the earliest. It is understood that Mertesacker will get a two-year extension and a salary hike on his £75,000-a-week wages as well.
