Now, without Owen, Rooney has stepped up into the primary striking role, and no one can doubt that he has always had the necessary skills to be a primary scoring threat. It has only been recently that he has played in the absence of another scoring threat like Owen, where he has been asked by Capello (and rightfully so) to become more selfish, as in the past he has been playmaking-focused almost to a fault. He has not only just come into the skills necessary to score, he's only just been asked to employ them for his own benefit more often, as he is often denied credit for the maturity and unselfishness of his game at such a young age.
