Vote for the next Manchester United manager
Roy Keane. Mark Hughes. Marcello Lippi. Carlos Queiroz.
Who would you pick (in two years) as your next Manchester United manager?
Roy Keane
A strong push for promotion in his first year as manager with Sunderland and the respect he commands in the Manchester United dressing room (not to mention that he’s the most popular figure of these four) gives Roy Keane a good chance.
He lacks the experience though - should that count against such a distinguished and capable individual?
Mark Hughes
Quality player, quality manager. He’s turned Blackburn (albeit slowly) into a team that plays to win and is consistently in the run for Europe.
He has more management experience than Keane (Wales and then Blackburn) but does he command the same respect as the rest of the candidates?
Marcello Lippi
A strong fan favourite as Ferguson’s successor at Manchester United, Lippi has the ability and experience required to take over a big club such as Manchester United.
He is the strongest candidate, but unlike the other three, he hasn’t been proven in England. The Premiership is a different animal than Serie A or La Liga (Benitez hasn’t been able to crack it). Will Lippi be able to cope?
Carlos Queiroz
Ferguson’s right-hand man at Manchester United and the closest in terms to the players. Has the necessary experience (the Real Madrid experience shouldn’t count against him) but do the fans trust him, and does the board want stability instead of the chance to bring in a manager who will improve as time goes by at Manchester United?

It’s a toss up between Hughes and Keane, really. But you’re missing Steve Coppell, he’s probably just as capable as those two.
Carlos queiroz is the perfect man to trust! he’s done it n has proved it as man utd assistant manager! he should be given his chance to prove himself better in terms of managing! then decide later to opt for a change if the team needs a fresh manager!
I’m not convinced with Queiroz, he might start us back on 4-5-1 again.
queiroz? no way, he has that something in him which most man utd fans don’t like. whats that called? oh yeah defensive football
lippi? maybe, but he doesnt speak english and he is old.
hughes? yes way
keane ? maybe, only just started managing, like to see him manage for around 2 or three seasons and then decide on him.
roy keane, knows the players, doin well at sunderland and his heart is with united. second, quieroz, knows the players, has experience and fergie has confidence and trust in him. i think keans, with quieroz as his right hand man
For me Roy Keane is a great manager in the making. I expect him to get Sunderland promoted this season - then sign a whole bunch of new players in the summer - and do well in the Premiership next season.
If that happens - he will be the next ManU manager.
Not sure Mark Hughes is good enough - although he has done great - with little funds - at Blackburn.
I vote for Mark Hughes and Roy Keane to co-manage
(if only they hadn’t such big egos!). Not sure why Queiroz deserves a look-in - most Man Utd fans seem to detest the man, and his experience at Real was nothing less than shocking. I am a Real fan and had a party the day he was sacked. Literally.
Seeing as Real Madrid have gone through a series of managers, none improving much on Queiroz’s record despite arguably better line-ups, I’d say the problem was from Real Madrid more than Queiroz’s managing.
i vote for mark hughes but i rekon that u need to put steve coppell whos a top manager. hes brought reading up into the premiership and he is not going for a place in europe, and hes a united legend.
I would go for keano, but wonder why Martin O’ Neill doesn’t even get a look in. According to various bookmakers, he’s right up there in the odds along with Hughes and Keane.
Good point Megalon.
I like Keane but he still needs to prove himself at the highest level…of management. BTW, was it Keane or ‘Kung Fu’ Cantona who swore off a Glazer owned United?
I know the fans don’t really like Queiroz. But I don’t think personality would come into play for me (or many others) if he continued to win titles and silverware. I would trust him if Alex does. Besides, I’m sure he played a significant role in getting Ronaldo signed. Who knows maybe he could help with Nani, hmmmmm……
Hughes next. Then Coppel for me.
Regardless of who gets the job the will have some big shoes to fill and will no doubt be somewhat of a dissapointment compared to SAF. Which fans will undoubtedly do. It will be tough for those of us who have only known Sir Alex as the manager. I think there will be a ‘Keane Syndrome’. Where fans will be looking for a ‘replacement’, only to realize there won’t be one. And it will be sometime before that role will be successfully filled, if ever.
Being born in ‘84, it’s very strange to think of anyone but sir alex in the dugout. I just plain don’t like Queiroz. He has something of the night about him. Either Hughes of Keane would be fine by me. 3 years and Sunderland could be an established EPL team, and Blackburn could have been in Europe consistently. If either of them manage that with the teams they have, it has to be proof of their ability.
Coppell - A bit too early for him, even if Reading completely dominated the Championship last season and have come along quite well this season.
Other candidates include Capello, Mourinho, Rijkaard and Steve McClaren…no laughing please
I don’t know Ahmed, Coppell’s got over 20 years of management experience under his belt already, and he’s one of the few people in football to have a degree. Other than Lippi, he’s probably the most qualified out of the five.
I hope it isn’t queiroz. his management style at madrid didn’t exactly have the fans dancing in aisles, did it? i don’t rate him very highly.
keano would be a good choice but for the lack of experience. with time, i have no doubt he’ll be a dead certainty for the hot seat
hughes could well be an excellent choice and he sure gets my vote. blackburn are now not just ready to scrap, but also play some real nice football. they’re only a couple of player away from europe and hughes part in that is pretty huge.
lippi is an awesome manager too, and he’s got the track record of a chapion, but let’s face it…he’d be a short term fix too. we need someone who will hang around so that the younger players can enjoy the tutelage and stability of a senior figurehead. somehow, i don’t lippi’s the one.
hiddink would be excellent too…but if he were to come to england, i think it’d be for chelski. and don’t even get me started on capello! madrid are so negative nowadays they’re unrecognisable from their previous incarnation. lost galacticos they may be, but capello hasn’t cut a popular figure with the boardroom or the madrid fans with his approach.
other who would be excellent are martin o’neill, (maybe) steve coppell or even roberto mancini (should inter release him, hough i don’t know why)
and where the hell is del bosque? not that i think he should manage man u (he’s too soft), but surely he’s good enough for some other side…
I think you should have McClaren……………
Yeah that would be great Steve McClaren in charge of United
The perfect candidate is Guus Hiddink. He has a good connection with Man United and he has shown he can deliver under with a small budget and make good quality players from nothing like Park Ji Sung and can motivate them aswell and with a huge budget like United has he can sign the perfect people and play an attrctive brand of football which United is known for unlike Capello. He has an impressive CV and is willing to take a gamble like play with 3 defenders at the back when the opposition playes a lone forward which is exactly the tactics I would play. His smart and has experience and knows how to speak english unlike capello and lippi. 2nd person I would pick would be Jose Mourinhio. He might not come but he would do excellent at United. So would Otmar Hitfeild and Martin O’Neil as well as Roy Keane!
