Manchester United and Chelsea are the two Premier League clubs constantly linked with a move for Valencia’s highly-rated Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes.

Jose Mourinho, the new Manchester United manager, rates the player highly and many thought he would use his close association with Jorge Mendes (both share a common agent) to secure a deal for Gomes.

Last month, reports surfaced in Spain that Mendes had promised Gomes to take him to United, while Portuguese journalist Silvio Vieira claimed the player prefers a move to Old Trafford.

United probably made several contacts with Valencia and tried to negotiate a deal for the 22-year-old, but Valencia’s €65m asking price was a bit too much that the Red Devils didn’t want to pay. Instead, Mourinho has moved quickly to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan for around €42m.

In recent weeks, La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly showing an interest in signing Gomes but the again the Blaugrana are unwilling to meet his transfer value. Barcelona have financial limitations and unless they recoup the money by selling Arda Turan or Marc Bartra, the Catalan giants won’t be able to finance a move for Gomes, whom they see as a potential long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta.

Serie A champions Juventus have had a shown an interest but having already signed Miralem Pjanic from Roma, the Old Lady probably won’t waste money on signing another similar type of midfielder.

Can Chelsea make a late move? The Blues have had a £32m bid rejected already and there is a possibility they may make an improved offer in the coming days.
