After losing 2-0 in the opening game against Colombia,it didn’t look like the US would qualify for the knock-out stages, but Jurgen Klinsmann’s side not only did improve from there on but ensured they finish as group leaders with back to back wins.

They bounced back strongly, beating Costa Rica 4-0 and Paraguay 1-0 in their remaining two matches. Clint Dempsey has been in good form, having scored twice and further assisting in two. However, the hosts will head into this game without their first-choice full-back DeAndre Yedlin, who will miss through suspension having picked up a red card in his final group match.

Ecuador have emerged as one of the outsiders to win the competition after they finished second in their group. They have a very good attacking squad, with West Ham’s Enner Valencia enjoying a good form with his national team. Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has been in good form as well, having scored in Ecuador’s final group game against Haiti.
