Great tactical change by Nowak coming into the tournament to change to a 4-5-1 as I called for on my blog earlier this week. Nowak unlike his boss Bob Bradley is tactically flexible enough to adjust to the circumstances and the performance today while shaky was good enough to see us get 3 points.

Now Holland who looked the weaker side against Nigeria is up next. A draw there and I like our chances of advancing!

Based on the performance in the two tune ups for the games, the Toulon Festival and Qualifying I'd be shocked if the US even gets a point out of this competition. Perhaps it was Hubris that had US Soccer building up this group of players or it was reasonable expectations: I know I was fired up about this team until I spent a week covering the team in Tampa during qualifying and felt we were lucky to even qualify as the other CONCACAF sides all looked more creative and technical other than Haiti perhaps. Freddy Adu basically single handily saved us from an embarrassing qualifying campaign: even Jozy Altidore looked out classed by the likes of Panama and Honduras. Then the two games last week were bordering on unwatchable from the US perspective as was the disastrous week in Toulon.

I'll be up at the wee hours cheering our boys on but right now I expect zilch from them. A single draw in three games would leave me feeling better about them than I do right now. And as I said above Freddy Adu was so brilliant in qualifying and in the U-20s last year maybe he'll turn it on again and make the other ten guys look better than they really are.
