US vs England for World Cup 2018
The BBC reports that England’s bid for WC 2018 (think we’ll win by then?) is under threat from US competition. You can read the full details here, but there are two things that spring to mind:
- The US is fast-growing market, so it’s an attractive option to FIFA
- The US has the necessary infrastructure to make such an event a success
It won’t matter for much that England haven’t hosted a WC for so long. What will matter is money and the potential to make more money, and that points to the US. Add Wembley to that and you can understand why people are getting worried.
The US could, always, take on Brazil’s bid for 2014 if Brazil is deemed unready, but that’s a bit unrealistic, because that would mean that Brazil would get it in 2018 (or would at least go for it and then eventually get it).

Surely they wouldn’t give it to the US just 24 years after they last hosted it?
You mean Wembley won’t even be ready by 2018 now!?
FIFA will give the World Cup to Australia either in 2014 or 2018 (more likely). Football is about to explode there and they have already proved they can host big events (remember the Olympic Games)
Australia is a country that has the potential to be one of the great soccer nations of the world. All you have to do is look at every other sport around the world, many of which are dominated by australia.
It would be great for soccer in australia if it hosted the world cup, they (like U.S.A) already have the necessary infrastructure. What do you think Ahmed?
Australia is a good option, but the US has more money
true
No, Australia is a greta place to hold the World Cup..Weve hosted the Olympics 2 times one in 1952 and in 2000 and the Commenwealth games a few times and we hasted the comm games in 2006.
Also we have a stadium bigger than Wembley here that can hold 103,000 and all areas arecovered a little place called tye MCG. oNE THING IS WE ONLY HAVE AROUND 9 huge STADIUMS AND THE REST ARE UNDER 35 THOUSAND. I think we will build 2-3 more in adelaide newcastle and canberra
I think for Fifa to hold the WC in the USA is rather typical, they like conning REAL football fans out of major events. No disrespect to any Americans on here but last time the US hosted the tornament almost 90% of America didnt even know about it!!!
It has to be England for its history, or Australia because Austra-laysia has never hosted the WC and we all know that Oz would but on a great tournament.
i think without putting on my Green and Gold coloured glasses.
Australia will get the 2018 world cup. Even though it has been speculated that the rotation policy has been scrapped it is still in the halls of FIFA the most diplomatic way of getting the greatest tournament in the world to the masses.
England wont get it till 2022 as the nextr European tournament. You have to remember there are more members of the Asian confederation than Europe and more people to watch it. And they are as fantatical about their football as Europeans. See the upcomming Asian Cup for proof.
So i hope you are all saving up coz OZ is going to put on a show that will knock everyones socks off !
Sorry had to post again to get the thread subscribed !
This is my plan for World Cup 2018 Australia
Stadium Australia - 85,000
Sydney Aussie Stadium - 47,000
MCG - 103,000
Telstra Dome - 55, 000
Stadium WA - 67,000 (To be built in 2008 finished in 2010-2011)
Suncorp Brisbane Stadium - 58,000
New Adelaide Rectangular Stadium - 42,000
Canberra Stadium - 44,000 (Down-graded to 33,000 after Wc)
Newcastle Stadium - 41,000 (also downgraded to 37,000 after Wc)
Another TWO Stadiums in Tasmania, Gold Coast, Central Coast or possibly Darwin.
Finals games to be held in the top 6 Locations that ive listed, Final to be held at the MCG and Semi at Sydney.
Not saying Melbourne is better but a bigger attendance will be there if the Final is at Melbourne Cricket Ground!
i like your thinking Kyle but i think you may have missed one !!
Stadium Australia - 85,000
Sydney Aussie Stadium - 47,000
MCG - 103,000
Melbourne Telstra Dome - 55, 000
Melbourne Rectangular - 40,000
Stadium WA - 67,000 (To be built in 2008 finished in 2010-2011)
Suncorp Brisbane Stadium - 58,000 (possibly another teir to 72,000)
New Adelaide Rectangular Stadium - 42,000 (expansion possible to 65,000)
Canberra Stadium - 44,000 (Down-graded to 33,000 after Wc)
Newcastle Stadium - 41,000 (also downgraded to 37,000 after Wc)
Gold Goast Stadium (League and Football franchise - 35,000)
Cental Coast (currently 24,000 - will need to be rebuilt to make it to 40,000)
Another TWO Stadiums in Tasmania, Gold Coast, Central Coast or possibly Darwin
As far as i know FIFA directive states that no WC stadium can be less than 40,000.
Quarters to be held at Stadium Australia, Suncorp, Stadium WA, Telstra Dome or MCG
Semis to be held at MCG and Stadium Australia
Final to be held at Stadium Australia (only because of the newer stadium and better facilities. Also because the crowd is closer to the field and the seats a monouverable. We all agree that the MCG is a fantastic venue but it is old and the fans are way too far away for a game on a rectangular field as its an Ozzie rules field.
Most of the MCG is newer than Stadium Australia with redevelopment completed 2006. capacity is 100,000.
And the 52 olympics were in Helsinki 56 was in Melbourne.
The MCG you say has some new redevelopment…So what.
The fact it is an oval stadium is a horrible way to watch a football game. I have been there and the atmosphere for AFL match is brilliant.but i have also been there for a football match and it was horrific….you are so far away from the game itself.
TBH the best stadium in Australia at the moment for Football is Suncorp Stadium. It is a true rectangular stadium and should be the model that each state tries for for games of Football and Rugby.
