Transfer Rumours (30 June 08): Martins to Arsenal, Keane to Liverpool, Adebayor to Chelsea, Aimar to Newcastle and more

Football ends for the summer and we have two months of transfer speculation, money-spinners pre-season friendlies and the first act of league action across Europe (before the break for World Cup 2010 qualification starts) to look forward to.

A look at today’s latest transfer rumors, including some of the tripe from Sunday:

Apparently some moron thought that Hull City were going to sign Christian Vieri for 10k / week. Some moron at the Daily Star, no less. Moron.

David Bentley to Tottenham?

Rumor Rating: 2 – The ‘former Arsenal player’ connection is great but where did you see Tottenham a) playing in the Champions League and b) looking to buy English players? Then again, there has been speculation before that Lennon could be out and Bentley coming in his place but surely Ince can hold on to him unless a top four club comes knocking, or unless Hughes wants Bentley badly…

Emmanuel Adebayor is valued at 30m by Arsenal.

Rumor Rating: 1 – Really? Compare his record to Darren Bent – Ade has 36 goals in 78 games for Arsenal, Bent had 31 goals in 68 games for Charlton. Not only that, Bent had a better goalscoring ratio prior to Charlton than Ade did prior to Arsenal. And Bent was overvalued at 16.5m. And they’re the same age (born in the same month, same year). You decide his price tag.

Liverpool are after Robbie Keane in a player+cash deal (player being Peter Crouch).

Rumor Rating: 2 – I’d be surprised if Tottenham let Keane go – they’ve learned their lesson on the pitch with Michael Carrick and will only let him go for 20m or more, and that’s only if he cries a river and wants to jump ship really really badly, which I doubt.

And then again, how many Peter Crouchies’ are there? Pompey want one, Liverpool were pawning one off to Villa and now there is another one going to Spurs? Maybe if they put them all together we’d have a decent striker for England? 🙂

Frank Lampard has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan.

Rumor Rating: 2 – This can be traced back to France Football, who claim to have talked to a source from inside Frank Lampard’s camp about the deal. After the Ronaldo case, one thing I know is that the club chasing a player must inform his club in writing of their interest before contacting the player directly. Chelsea have already said that there has been no official approach for the player. I would assume that this is just another rumor, but Lampard’s contract situation and Mourinho’s presence at Inter makes me give this a 2 instead of a -1.

Arsenal will bring in Marcos Senna to fill the Flamini-sized gap in their midfield.

Rumor Rating: 1 – Gilberto Silva is of a similar age, already acclimatised and plays the same role. And are Denilson and Diaby being sold? No? Then Senna would be useless – Arsenal would be after a much younger, and much faster, midfielder.

Daily Mirror thinks that Chelsea can bring Emmanuel Adebayor to Stamford Bridge for 30m.

Rumor Rating: 1 – Wenger selling his best-performing striker in the league to a direct title rival? You’re having a laugh!

And if Adebayor was to leave Arsenal, Wenger is expected to make a move for Newcastle United’s Obafemi Martins, rekindling last summer’s hooplah about the ‘get-out’ clause Martins has in his contract.

Rumor Rating: 2 – I’m not convinced that Ade will go, and I’m not so convinced that Wenger will buy if Ade goes. He might buy Martins regardless and sell a younger striker (read Bendtner), or he might go with four strikers if Ade leaves.

Real Madrid’s Robinho has now been linked to Chelsea as the player is rumoured to be unhappy with his ‘low’ wages at Madrid. And Madrid are asking for 27m…

Rumor Rating: 2 – Don’t see it happening unless Malouda / SWP leave, and he’s not going to play as an out and out striker, is he? Then again, he’d be a longer-term investment than Ronaldinho or Deco for sure, but 27m is way too much.

Liverpool target Gareth Barry has been priced at 18m by Martin O’Neill.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Not surprised at this at all – Villa own Barry and can demand whatever fee they want, as long as Barry staying doesn’t harm team morale, which I’m sure it won’t since he’s such a good professional.

The Times reports that Sevilla have turned town a 12.5m offer from Tottenham for Diego Capel.

Rumor Rating: 3 How many wingers do Tottenham need (before they start selling some of their players)? And typical Sevilla…

Newcastle United have been linked again with Pablo Aimar. Everton and Liverpool have also been mentioned, God knows why though.

Rumor Rating: 2 – Old rumor being drudged up again, but it would be interesting to see him play in the Premier League. And he’s getting on in years, so this could be his best chance of playing for big bucks and securing his financial future.

That’s your lot for today – got a few post-Euro roundups to do so look out for that later today and we’ll be back tomorrow with more.
