Transfer Rumors (6 August 08): Zenit raise Arshavin asking price, Tottenham’s Ashton bid rejected, Liverpool back in for Riera?, and more

You know we can’t have a transfer roundup without mentioning at least one of the summer’s drawn-out transfer sagas, and that’s what we start today’s roundup with.

The Andrei Arshavin saga goes on and on, as Zenit St. Petersburg are now holding out for at least £21m from Tottenham, who don’t really want to pay that much for a player who was rated at less than £15m not too long ago.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Well, if you’ve got a gold mine, you might as well squeeze out every bit for him possible, eh? If they’re going to raise the price for him, they might as well keep him so that they can keep themselves in the fray for the Russian Premier League title and in a position to make a run in the Champions League, which carries plenty of money in itself.

We know how Tottenham have been linked with many a striker this summer, and it appears that they’ve been rebuffed by West Ham in a £15m bid for Dean Ashton.

Rumor Rating: 3 – If I were West Ham, I’d consider that big of a bid, but they’re not in a position where they exactly need the money. Besides that, if Ashton is healthy (and while it’s a big if, he may be this season), he can put in a lot of goals for the Hammers.

Liverpool could very well be back in for Espanyol’s Albert Riera after the recent developments pertaining to Sebastien Leto being unable to get a work permit and subsequently being shipped off on a two-year loan to Olympiakos.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Riera’s not going to come dirt cheap, so will Liverpool have to sell someone to help fund a move for him if they’re still intent on getting Gareth Barry?

According to The Sun, Everton are interested in making a move for Newcastle’s Alan Smith, who could cost only £3m.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Smith hasn’t exactly fulfilled the expectations that have been heaped on him through the years, but he’s still only 27, and a move to Everton could help get him really going again.

Hull and Stoke are being linked with a move for Benfica striker Ariza Makukula.

Rumor Rating: 3 – The 27-year old Makukula, who has a goal in four caps for Portugal, wouldn’t be an expensive buy. Hull need extra striker help a little more than Stoke do, seeing as how they seem to be losing in their quest to sign Fraizer Campbell and haven’t pushed through with a deal for Marlon King, while Stoke have already splashed out some cash for Dave Kitson.

Wigan are looking to make a £3m swoop for young Ipswich striker David Haynes.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Norwich City fans might be hoping that this move goes through, considering that the 20-year old has made a habit of burning them since breaking into the Ipswich first team in 2006.

Sevilla have signed Racing Santander midfielder Aldo Duscher for €3m. Duscher’s buy-out clause was €4m, but Sevilla worked it down to €3m up front plus a further €1m in add-ons.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Sevilla have done a pretty good job reinforcing their squad without having to spend a great deal of the money that they’ve received from the sales they’ve made this summer.

Atletico Madrid are planning a loan move for Valencia midfielder Ever Banega. The highly-rated 20-year old isn’t likely to be a regular at Valencia this season, so Atletico could give him that chance – provided they can sell Maniche.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The move to Atletico would be good for Banega, since he needs to mature and get some experience right now, and being a part of Atletico’s potential Champions League campaign and march at a La Liga title would do a lot for that.

Real Betis could be set for a move for Getafe’s Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche.

Rumor Rating: 3 – The arrival of Uche, if Getafe do get a suitable offer for him, could signal the end of Rafael Sobis’ disappointing time with Betis, with newly-promoted Bundesliga side Hoffenheim having put in a €10m bid for him.

After selling playmaker Mancini to Inter recently, Roma need reinforcements in that area, but who will it be? In today’s bits, they’re being linked with Monaco’s Jeremy Menez (previously linked with Portsmouth, among others) and Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun (previously linked with West Ham and others).

Rumor Rating: 3 – Benayoun would be the cheaper of the two, while Menez, though more expensive (€15m or so), has bags and bags of potential.

Fiorentina have signed Juventus midfielder Sergio Almiron on loan for the season.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Almiron didn’t make much of an impact in the first half of last season after a move from Empoli, and he spent the second half of the season on loan at Monaco. But, he has a chance to ‘redeem’ himself with the spell at Fiorentina, and as it happens, Fiorentina’s Serie A campaign starts against Juve.

Defender Matteo Ferrari looks set to be on his way to Genoa, not Inter. Just the other day, it looked like the 28-year old was all set to move to Inter on a free to provide much-needed defensive cover, but now, the reports are that he’s headed to Genoa.

Rumor Rating: 5 – With the addition of Ferrari and Greek prospect Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Genoa have greatly bolstered their defense over the last few days.

Swedish midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson has moved from Nantes to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal for a little less than €4m.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Wilhelmsson was linked with West Ham earlier in the summer, but the move to Saudi Arabia could prove to be a pretty lucrative one. Will it have any bearing on his future with the Swedish national team? We’ll see.

Arminia Bielefeld have signed Zambian attacker Christopher Katongo from Danish side Brondby for a fee of €2m.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The 25-year old Katongo is the captain of the Zambian national side and has scored 10 goals in 41 international appearances.

Le Mans defender Marko Basa is reportedly closing in on a £6m move to Celtic.

Rumor Rating: 5 – This is a deal that’s been in the works for much of the last month, but hopefully there’s finally going to be a resolution.

Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. I’ll be back tomorrow with more of the latest headlines from the busy transfer world, but until then, chime in, chip in, and see you then.
