Transfer Rumors (30 May 08): Alonso to Juventus, Duff to Sunderland, Kewell to Celtic, and more

My, how the week flies! Just the other day it was Monday, and now it’s Friday. Party time for me, and probably for you, but before there’s any craziness, there’s a transfer roundup to run through.

Spanish sports newspaper Marca, ever the beacon of bullshit, is doing their part to stir the Cristiano Ronaldo pot as they’re throwing about the idea that Ronaldo could put in a transfer request so that he can get his move to Real Madrid.

Rumor Rating: 1 – Will this soap opera end soon? Will I be asking this question five years from now?

The Daily Mirror says that Xabi Alonso could be on the verge of a move to Juventus after five hours of talks in Turin on Wednesday night, with Alonso’s agent and the club agreeing in principle over a four-year deal.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The price may well yet prove to be an obstacle, as Liverpool want 16 million for him, four million more than what Juventus want to offer.

Cardiff have rejected Arsenal and Liverpool’s bids for whizkid Aaron Ramsey, as the bids, both in the region of 5 million pounds, didn’t include enough in the way of up-front payment.

Rumor Rating: 3 – We know Ramsey will sign on with one of the Premier League’s top sides soon enough – who will it be?

AC Milan or Lyon? Lyon or AC Milan? Nice keeper Hugo Lloris has appeared on the verge of moves to both clubs recently, and finally, he’s decided on his destination, and it’s to the French powers.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Not the longest transfer saga in history, but it was about time something was decided one way or another.

Roy Keane could be making a move to bring fellow Irishman Damien Duff to Sunderland from Newcastle.

Rumor Rating: 4 – A fresh start could be just what Duff needs to rediscover his old form, as his two seasons in Newcastle haven’t been particularly memorable thanks in part to injuries.

Fulham are interested in Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood, though Rangers and newly-promoted Stoke are also interested in him, according to the Daily Mail.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Harewood did score six goals in his debut season at Villa, but all but a handful of his appearances came off as a sub

Rangers are one of several sides eyeing Middlesbrough’s promising young winger Adam Johnson.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Boro will likely allow only a loan deal, but even so, Rangers should have the edge over the Premier League sides in the race, as Gareth Southgate might not be too willing to let one of his top prospects go to a rival league side.

Celtic are one of several teams being mentioned with a move for Liverpool’s Harry Kewell, who is likely on his way out. The other clubs also reportedly interesting in signing the Australian star are Newcastle, Juventus, and MLS side New York Red Bulls.

Rumor Rating: 5 – If Kewell can stay healthy, he’ll still be of plenty of value on club level, so maybe it’s just all about finding the right place for him. Liverpool certainly isn’t it, however.

Valencia are said to be interested in Toulouse’s Swedish forward Johan Elmander, and could table an offer of 7 million euros for the 27-year old.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Toulouse reportedly want a good deal more than 7 million, so that could put off some clubs (Galatasaray, Hamburg SV, Manchester City, along with Barcelona, Juventus, and Liverpool have been mentioned as keeping an eye on him).

Jose Mourinho is already outlining the players that he wants to bring in this summer, as he’s set to take the Inter job. The Special One wants his new club to go after Napoli’s in-demand midfielder Marek Hamsik, along with Udinese’s Gokhan Inler, Sevilla’s Diego Capel (who looks to be on his way to Tottenham), and Arsenal’s Alexander Hleb.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Could he get all four players? Three is more likely, with Capel seemingly on his way to Tottenham.

Well, that’s it for today – chime in, chip in, and I’ll be back tomorrow with more of the latest transfer speculation.
