Transfer Rumors (29 July 08): Liverpool tie up Keane, Man United to bid for Henry, Arsenal move for Udinese’s Inler, and more

There’s quite a lot of money being thrown about and quite a lot to talk about in today’s transfer roundup. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Liverpool have sealed a £20.3m deal for Tottenham striker Robbie Keane.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Fernando Torres is a happy, happy man right now. Liverpool needed to get a quality partner for him to establish optimal continuity up front, and they’ve done just that by getting Keane.

So, is that it for Liverpool’s summer buys? It would seem so, unless they do some selling. As it happens, a mystery Spanish club has put in a £6m bid for defender Alvaro Arbeloa.

Could Manchester United be lining up a move for Thierry Henry? The Daily Mail says that a £15m bid is in the works.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Barcelona could be up for selling him to fund more summer moves, but how many of you can really picture Henry in a United shirt? Well, nothing’s beyond the realm of possibility, especially now that he’s in Barcelona and not London, but we’ll have to see.

Arsenal could be set to swoop for Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler. The Swiss international’s release clause is £5m, and reports are saying that the Gunners are set to pony up that amount to make a move for the 24-year old.

Rumor Rating: 5 – After taking a huge hit in midfield this summer, it’s a must for Arsenal to offset those losses before the season starts.

Sunderland certainly haven’t seemed shy about splashing the cash this summer, and according to the Telegraph, they’ve put in a £10m bid for Manchester United’s Louis Saha.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Saha’s got potential to bag a lot of goals if he’s healthy, but that is a big, big if. But if United can get that much for him, they’d certainly take it in a heartbeat.

Fulham are set to complete a big-money deal for Everton striker Andy Johnson very shortly. The fee has been agreed, with only the loose ends on the personal side needing to be tied up.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The fee is said to be £10.75m, and according to the Daily Mail, Everton will use those funds to make both an improved offer for Sporting’s Joao Moutinho and to move for Darren Bent, though with the sale of Keane, Tottenham may be looking to hold on to Bent now.

Manchester City are reportedly leading the race for Marseille’s Taye Taiwo. The Nigerian defender is rated at £6m, which would be small change for City to pay for the 23-year old.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Sunderland are also interested in Taiwo, who has a penchant for scoring, as he has seven goals in 26 appearances for Nigeria and netted four times last season for Marseille.

Bolton have signed Dutch winger Mustapha Riga on a three-year deal from Levante.

Rumor Rating: 5 – There’s still some legal stuff to clear up, but just as quickly as Bolton lose El-Hadji Diouf, they have a replacement in their attack.

Bolton are also set to make another bid for Reading’s James Harper. Harper has also been a target for Middlesbrough, but it looks like Harper is Bolton’s for the taking now, provided they make a sufficient bid for him.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Whatever Reading gets for Harper, 40% has to go to Arsenal, where he started his career before moving to Reading in 2001.

Hull City are looking to make a season-long loan move for PSG striker Fabrice Pancrate, with their £3m deal for Marlon King currently in limbo.

Rumor Rating: 5 – They’ll be best suited to keep pushing through on the King deal, even if they go for Pancrate, who hasn’t really lit up the score sheet throughout his time with PSG.

Manchester United’s Chris Eagles is set to move to Burnley in a £1.25m deal.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Eagles has impressed in the preseason and has great potential, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be much of a factor for United when the real action begins, and with him well down the pecking order and set to turn 23 later this year, a permanent move elsewhere is the best option.

QPR have signed Blackpool defender Kaspars Gorkss for £250k, striker Daniel Nardiello, and defender Zesh Rehman.

Rumor Rating: 5 – This brings an end to a transfer wrangle that saw Blackpool report QPR to the FA for an illegal approach for the Latvian international last month. QPR certainly look to have gotten the better end of the deal by having to pay so little for an internationally experienced, goal-scoring defender in Gorkss, who was one of the top talents in the Championship last term.

Inter have signed Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari for a sizable fee, believed to be in the region of €16m.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The deal is good for both sides. Inter have been looking to bolster the midfield this summer, and Portsmouth needed the funds to make some more buys ahead of a run in Europe and at a top-four to six finish in the Premier League.

Bordeaux have signed veteran defender Diego Placente from San Lorenzo. The 31-year old Argentine has made a quick return to Europe after leaving Celta Vigo last year.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Placente, who has 22 caps for Argentina, played for Bayer Leverkusen from 2001-05 and was part of their Champions League runner-up squad in the 2001/02 campaign, so he’ll provide great experience to Bordeaux’s back line as they make a foray into the CL next term.

Nancy defender Sebastien Puygrenier was all set to move to St. Etienne, but it looks like he’s now headed for Zenit St. Petersburg after changing his mind at the last minute.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Champions League & Super Cup vs. UEFA Cup. Hmmm….

Ghanaian striker Eric Bekoe is set for a week long trial with Hertha Berlin.

Rumor Rating: 4 – The Ghanaian top flight’s leading scorer was linked with Tottenham recently, but he might be better off making the move to Germany, where he can get regular first-team chances in a top-class league for a few seasons before moving on elsewhere.

Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. What do you think of today’s tidbits? Keane to Liverpool – will it make the Reds a serious title contender in the upcoming campaign? Could Henry actually suit up for Manchester United? £10m for Saha – are United going to take the money and run?

Chime in with your thoughts on today’s news, chip in with bits you’ve heard and read, and I’ll be back tomorrow.
