Transfer Rumors (25 June 08): Guiza to Arsenal, Liverpool to get adjusted Crouch offer, Ince to make first signing, and more
It’s a full day of news and rumors, so sit back and enjoy today’s roundup of transfer tidbits.
The Daily Mail says that Portsmouth won’t be upping their offer of nine million pounds for Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, but instead, they’ll increase the initial payment from the original seven million in hopes of landing Crouch.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Unless Aston Villa or someone else jumps in with an offer of 10 million-plus, this is the best Liverpool are going to get for Crouch, and considering their likely ‘buy-to-sell’ situation, can they afford to get picky about a mil or two?
Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Mallorca’s Dani Guiza, with it now looking increasingly likely that Emmanuel Adebayor is set to leave. Their interest means that Fenerbahce, who Guiza underwent a medical last week, will have a fight on their hands to secure the free-scoring Spaniard.
Rumor Rating: 4 – If Arsenal do sell Adebayor for 20-25 million pounds, they’ll only have to spend about half of it on Guiza, whose buy-out clause is 12 million pounds.
Paul Ince’s first signing as Blackburn manager could be one of his players from MK Dons, as the Mirror says that Rovers could land MK Dons captain Keith Andrews for 1.5 million pounds. The 27-year old Irish midfielder, who scored 14 goals for the League Two champions last season, not only played for Ince, but he was also a teammate of Ince’s at Wolves.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Andrews, who scored 14 goals for MK Dons last season, could have a chance to put himself into serious national team consideration by making the move to the top flight.
Aston Villa’s move for Steve Sidwell is being delayed due to Sidwell holding out for a two million pound settlement from Chelsea.
Rumor Rating: 4 – If I could get that much money for every mistake I’ve made in life, I’d be filthy rich.
According to The Sun, QPR should sign young Fiorentina striker Samuel Di Carmine on a season-long loan in the next week.
Rumor Rating: 4 – The 19-year old striker has one senior goal to his credit, which he scored in a UEFA Cup demolition of Swedish side Elsborg in November.
Burnley have snapped up highly-rated Dundee midfielder Kevin McDonald for 500,000 pounds. Burnley had a 250,000 pound offer rejected last month, but the doubled offer did the trick.
Rumor Rating: 5 – McDonald, who won’t turn 20 until December, will add another young scorer (11 goals for Dundee last season) to Burnley’s squad after the pickup of Martin Paterson a few days ago.
Plymouth have signed Colchester captain Karl Duguid for an undisclosed fee. The 30-year old Duguid’s versatility will come in handy, as the former midfielder will play at right back for Paul Sturrock’s side.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Duguid was Colchester’s longest-serving player, and he was also recently selected as the club’s greatest player of all-time by the supporters.
Sporting de Gijon are set to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar on a free. The 24-year old will sign on for four seasons, and the deal will include a buy-back clause for Atletico.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Cuellar spent last season on loan with Eibar, who finished 12th in the Spanish second division.
Juventus are reportedly considering a bid for Tottenham target Diego Milito, who they could see as a replacement for Vincenzo Iaquinta, who could leave this summer.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Milito would form quite the deadly partnership with David Trezeguet, who’s set to stay at Juve after being linked with a move away from the club.
Juve are also preparing to make a move for rising Turkish star Arda Turan, with Sergio Almiron and Jonathan Zebina possibly headed to Turan’s club Galatasaray.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Turan’s stock has risen over the last few weeks, as he’s been a key part of Turkey’s run to the Euro 2008 semifinals, scoring two key goals in the group stage.
Sampdoria have made a bid of six million euros for co-ownership of Fiorentina forward Giampaolo Pazzini.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Pazzini scored nine goals last season, but with the purchase of Alberto Gilardino and with the presence of the promising Pablo Osvaldo, Fiorentina might not be too upset about letting him go.
Napoli are finally going to complete the signing of Independiente striker German Denis next week.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Denis, who scored 27 goals in the Apertura and Clausura comined over the last year, will sign a five-year deal.
Siena have signed Portuguese defender Goncalo Brandao from Belenenses for a fee between 300 and 400,000 euros.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The 21-year old previously had a loan spell with Charlton in the 2005/06 season.
Bordeaux will not be signing Manchester United’s Mikael Silvestre. According to Bordeaux’s president, Silvestre’s salary at United and the chance to have a testimonial match helped rule out a move back to his home country.
Rumor Rating: 1 – Well, even though he’s not likely to be more than a role player at United in the rest of his time there, he certainly knows when he’s got it good, and you can’t fault him for that.
Toulouse are set to sign Marseille keeper Cedric Carrasso
Rumor Rating: 5 – Carrasso was sidelined by an Achilles’ injury last season that allowed Marseille’s backup keeper to entrench himself as the new #1, and thereby force Carrasso into looking for a new situation.
Well, that’s it for today. Ahmed’s going to take over Thursday’s transfer roundup while I’m on the road, but I should be back for Friday.
