Transfer Rumors (22 August 08): Arsenal confirm interest in Barry, Man City getting some Kompany, Sheva stalemate for Chelsea and AC Milan, and more

The amount of time left in the transfer window gets shorter, and so do the amount of transfer tidbits to talk about. Even though there isn’t a great deal to report on, you know I’ll be here to deliver it, true, false, or absolutely outlandish.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed his interest in Gareth Barry, but will he take it any further than that? It may not be so much that Barry is cup-tied for European play until the knockout stages, but instead it’s having to fork out a lot of money for a player who’s not young.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Liverpool likely won’t be backing down on their valuation of Xabi Alonso, so Barry would seem to be the better option of the two right now, cup-tied or not. However, it remains to be seen if Arsene is indeed willing to part with a fairly sizable fee to sign him.

Manchester City are closing in on a deal for Hamburg SV defender Vincent Kompany after the club accepted a bid for the Belgian star.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Hamburg wanted Kompany to return from the Olympics to start the season with the club instead of continuing with Belgium’s successful run, which Kompany was openly unhappy about. All of that aside, if he can stay away from the bothersome injury bug, this is quite the bargain for City.

The Daily Mail says that City have also turned their striker search to Real Zaragoza’s Diego Milito, who’s been linked with both Tottenham and Everton this summer.

Rumor Rating: 3 – City certainly have the money to swing a deal for Milito, who probably doesn’t want to spend much time, if any, playing in the Spanish second division, but it might just be a matter of whether or not he’d prefer that to a move to England

AC Milan’s move for Andriy Shevchenko has reportedly collapsed. Apparently, Chelsea only want to sell him outright instead of loaning him out like it appeared that they would.

Rumor Rating: 3 – It’s not exactly worth it for AC Milan to spend a fair amount of money on a risky permanent deal for Sheva, but we’ll see if the deal is indeed off, or if there’s still hope for it to get done in the next several days.

Portsmouth have sealed the signing of Arsenal defender Armand Traore on a season-long loan, and they’ve also made what was a loan deal for Charlton winger Jerome Thomas into a permanent one.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Pompey got the defensive cover that they needed by signing Traore, and it could prove to be a very profitable move for them, even if a permanent deal isn’t necessarily in the works once the loan is up.

Sunderland have boosted their front line with the signings of Djibril Cisse on loan from Marseille and David Healy from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Healy’s one season at Fulham saw him score only six goals, but both he and Cisse should prove to be good options for Roy Keane while Kenwyne Jones continues to recover from his knee issues.

Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. Hopefully there’ll be plenty to discuss this weekend as we follow all of the league action far and wide, but until I return tomorrow, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you keep caught up with the updated summer transfer lists.
