Transfer Rumors 20 May 2008: Carson to Villa, Cuellar to Newcastle, Bridge to Juventus, and more

There’s plenty of news to report today, and we’ll start with a couple of signings by some of Europe’s top clubs.

Real Madrid have completed a deal to sign Racing Santander defender Ezequiel Garay for 11 million euros.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Garay has shown a great deal of talent – and a knack for scoring – in his time at Racing, and he’s only 21, so Real are getting him at the right time.

AC Milan have completed a deal for Nice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, snapping up the 21-year old for 5 million euros.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Lloris has a lot of promise, and while he may not immediately be the Rossoneri’s #1 in goal, he’ll certainly have a shot in the near future.

Could Thierry Henry leave Barcelona after only one season? With Pep Guardiola replacing Frank Rijkaard, several squad changes are expected.

Rumor Rating: 2 – Even though he has some injury issues, he’s still good for the regular goal, so he won’t be short of suitors if Barca puts him on the market.

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool could offer Peter Crouch and Scott Carson to Aston Villa in exchange for Gareth Barry. However, a more recent report says that Carson is on the verge of signing a permanent deal to stay at Villa, with six million pounds going to Liverpool.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Maybe Rafa Benitez lowered the price for Carson in hopes that it’d aid his chances for nabbing Barry. Martin O’Neill is not amused!

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Barcelona’s Yaya Toure, but could they sell brother Kolo, who’s unhappy about many, many things, most notably feeling that William Gallas being more important than him, according to The Sun.

Rumor Rating: 2 – We’ll be monitoring this situation, but for now, it’s nothing to jump up and down over just yet.

Arsenal are also reportedly interested in a move for Manchester United target Miguel Veloso, as a replacement for Mathieu Flamini.

Rumor Rating: 2 – His price tag – more than 20 million pounds. Think Arsene’ll have a go?

Everton have been linked with a move for former Liverpool man Alou Diarra, who’s doing well at Ligue 1 runners-up Bordeaux. Diarra would be a replacement for Lee Carsley, who’s off to Birmingham City.

Rumor Rating: 3 – After bouncing around for a while, Diarra’s finally landed somewhere, and had a great debut season for Bordeaux, so he might not be too antsy for a move, and neither might Laurent Blanc.

Newcastle could make a move for Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar after an excellent debut season in Scotland.

Rumor Rating: 2 – Rangers will be hard-pressed to let go of Cuellar after he’s been such a big asset for them, but the right amount can tempt anyone. Well, almost anyone.

According to the Daily Mail, Claudio Rainieri could be reunited with Wayne Bridge, as Juventus have made an official approach for the Chelsea defender, who doesn’t have much of a future in London, and needs to find a new home to make sure he remains a regular part of Fabio Capello’s plans.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Think he’ll do well at Juve?

Veteran striker Christian Vieri is being linked with a move to Romanian side Rapid Bucharest. It’s been a forgettable end to the season for Vieri, who had a crucial penalty shootout miss in Fiorentina’s UEFA Cup semifinal loss to Rangers.

Rumor Rating: 5 – He’s out of contract, so he’ll be on the move somewhere. Hull City could also be a potential option, especially if they get promoted.

Toulouse striker Johan Elmander could be on his way to a mystery Spanish club in the near future, according to

Rumor Rating: 4 – Who could it be? Sevilla pop into my head, simply because they could be parting ways with Luis Fabiano, but we’ll see.

Well, well, it’s that time again. You know what to do – chime in and chip in!
