Transfer Rumors (19 August 08): Blackburn make bid for Joaquin, Chelsea’s Ivanovic set for Milan?, Rangers go after yet another midfielder, and more

Share

I’m back to give you all the latest top transfer news headlines, and while there are no official signings to report today, there are several potential ones to report, along with some rumors as to who could be on the move and to where.

England

Blackburn have reportedly made a £9.5m bid for Valencia winger Joaquin.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Joaquin hasn’t exactly justified the 25m fee that Valencia paid for him two years ago and was left out of Spain’s Euro 2008 squad. No telling how he may fare in England, but if he’s at his former best, then he’d be as good a replacement for David Bentley as they could find… even an upgrade, perhaps.

Fulham are interested in Sunderland midfielder Dickson Etuhu. The Nigeria international is a dispensable member of Roy Keane’s squad, and a deal could be imminent.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Reports say that a deal could include striker David Healy, which would boost Sunderland’s front line in a much-needed way.

Italy

The agent of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic says that his client could be set for a move to AC Milan.

Rumor Rating: 3 – The move may not happen, because even despite the fact that Ivanovic is a little down on the totem pole in the backline, Chelsea apparently want to hold on to him for depth reasons.

Juventus may be going after Belgium’s Olympic hero Moussa Dembele. The 21-year old was the star of his country’s thrilling 3-2 quarterfinal defeat of Italy on Saturday, scoring two goals, including the 79th minute winner.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Dembele didn’t have a great club campaign for AZ Alkmaar, but he’s shown his potential on the world stage in Beijing, scoring three goals with more potentially to come.

Lazio are one of multiple clubs interested in American international defender Oguchi Onyewu. The 26-year old Onyewu has been at Belgian side Standard Liege since 2004, and he was a key part of their run to the Belgian league title last season.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Onyewu had a loan spell at Newcastle in the 2006/07 season in the hopes of getting a move to a more prominent league, but that didn’t work out.

Bologna are set to sign Roma striker Stefano Chuka Okaka on loan next week.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The 18-year old Italy U-19 international spent last season on loan at Serie B side Modena, where he scored seven goals.

Scotland

Rangers are set to open negotiations with Palermo over a move for midfielder Mark Bresciano. Rangers could very well pay as much as €10m for the Australia international.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Rangers seem to be focusing on strengthening their midfield as the window comes to a close, but they may well try to snap up at least one central defender over the next couple of weeks. However, given the flurry of signings that they’re making, it’d seem like their resources might be limited following their signing of Bresciano.

France

It looks like Mateja Kezman’s move to PSG is back on and about to be finalized. It looked like the move was all but off just a short time ago, but it seems like only a few finishing touches are left on an initial loan move.

Rumor Rating: 5 – PSG did register an impressive win against Bordeaux last weekend, but they still do need to add some quality firepower up front, so this signing can’t get done soon enough.

Portugal

Benfica are interested in Inter striker David Suazo. The 28-year old Honduran striker netted eight times in his debut season at Inter after a highly-successful eight-season spell at Cagliari.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Benfica are still searching for a new striker after failing to get Espanyol’s Luis Garcia, and they would offer Suazo more regular first-team opportunities than he’d get this season at Inter.

Holland

Ajax midfielder Kennedy Bakircioglu is set for the exit door at Ajax, as several English and Spanish sides are reportedly interested in the 27-year old Sweden international and former Football Manager legend.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Kennedy moved to Ajax last summer after an impressive two seasons at Twente during which he scored 24 league goals, but he wasn’t able to replicate that form last term, and Marco van Basten has told him that he’s surplus to requirements.

Russian side Dinamo Moscow are interested in Twente defender Luke Wilkshire. The 26-year old Australian international has been at Twente since 2006, and has been a regular for the club over the last couple of seasons.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Wilkshire, who has 26 caps for Australia, started his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Bristol City in 2003, staying there until his move to Twente.

Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. Hopefully there’ll be plenty to report on tomorrow, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with bits that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you check out the updated summer transfer lists.

  1. Luke Wilkshire is by far Twente’s best player, or at least top two. I don’t think they will be letting him go. Especially since he is already cup tied after playing again Arsenal. They will need him for the 2nd leg if they plan on getting past Arsenal (very very very doubtful).

Also, speaking of Arsenal, any updates on who that mystery man Wenger said they are planning to sign “very soon”.

  2. chelsea are the most ‘interesting’ sides i’ve ever seen! they have a history of buyin players with massive potential and then turnin them into rubbish second string players(take shaun wright phillips 4 example).he was a player tipped to replace beckham 4 england then chelsea came along and then his career disappeared into thin air! i just hope they dont do the same with ivanovic!

  3. any news on arshavin!or has he decided 2 stay put at zenit!

  4. I sort of hope in a way that it is Xabi Alonso.

  5. btw that was in response to Ryan

  6. I’m a Liverpool fan and I am finally ready to let Alonso go. I hoped Liverpool would keep him as he was still playing most of the games but the fact that he now wants to go means that the club should let him go. Also they would get quite a few bob that they may need if they are going to strengthen their wingers.
