Transfer Rumors (15 July 08): Chelsea make late bid for Ronaldinho, Spurs strike deal for Bentley, Spurs and United looking to settle Berbatov fee, and more
There are a lot of noteworthy names to report on in today’s transfer roundup, as a few ongoing transfer sagas could be set to wrap up soon – or maybe they’re just heating up.
Is Chelsea coming in for Ronaldinho at the last minute? Is David Bentley getting the big move that he wants? Is Dimitar Berbatov getting closer to signing for Manchester United? You may know the answers already, but we’ve got a lot more to talk about than just those big names.
Chelsea are reportedly lining up an £18m bid for Ronaldinho, looking to hijack his potential move to either Manchester City or AC Milan. It looks like City may actually be leading the race for him, as they offered £25.5m to Barcelona and can meet his salary demands, though AC Milan have been long touted as his preferred destination.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Chelsea have the money to outbid City and to pay just as much in wages, and they also offer up Champions League football and a familiar face in Luiz Felipe Scolari, who was the Brazil boss when Ronnie helped lead Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have agreed a £17m deal with Blackburn for David Bentley that will also send out-of-favor goalkeeper Paul Robinson to Ewood Park as a replacement for Aston Villa-bound Brad Friedel.
Rumor Rating: 5 – He won’t be getting the Champions League football that he wants just yet, but he will be playing in Europe next season, and if the talent that Spurs have can play up their abilities (and the defense becomes less sieve-like), the CL may not be far off in the future.
Tottenham, intent on doing quite a bit of spending this summer, are also set to do some selling – but only at the right price. According to The Sun, Spurs have slapped a £30m price tag on Manchester United target Dimitar Berbatov.
Rumor Rating: 5 – There’ve been reports that a £28m fee has been agreed, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet, so it’s waiting game time.
Portsmouth and Tottenham are reportedly working out a deal for defender Younes Kaboul, who is set to leave London after not living up to the £7m fee that Tottenham paid for him last summer.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Defensively, Pompey were actually one of the league’s better sides, but if Kaboul, who’s still far from a finished product at 22, can show the form that brought him to England in the first place, this is a move that could only benefit Portsmouth.
One player Tottenham don’t want to let go of is highly-rated midfielder Jamie O’Hara Fulham have tried with both a loan and permanent (£4m) offer, but both have been knocked back by Spurs. The 21-year old England U-21 man looks to be one for the future for both club and country, so Juande Ramos is surely keen to hold on to him.
Rumor Rating: 1 – O’Hara had some impressive showings for Tottenham last season, which earned him a place in England’s U-21 squad and a new contract that runs until 2011.
Scott Carson is set to decide between West Brom and Stoke, and it appears that he’s leaning towards becoming the newest member of Tony Mowbray’s squad in a deal that will pay Liverpool £3.5m initially and could rise to £4m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Liverpool may not be getting as much as they want for him, but Carson will at least get his permanent move and some stability by moving to West Brom, which could prove vital to his England hopes.
According to the Mirror, Everton are making a move for Lille right back Stephan Lichtsteiner. The 24-year old, who has 12 caps for Switzerland could be available for £700k, as he has only a year left on his current deal.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Lichtsteiner was also reportedly linked with Real Madrid a short time ago, so that might be a good indication of how highly he’s thought of.
Charlton are considering a £1.5m bid for Bolton striker Heidar Helguson. Helguson moved to Bolton from Fulham last summer, but he made only eight appearances and scored only two goals due to injuries.
Rumor Rating: 4 – The 30-year old could be a replacement for Marcus Bent, who looks set to join Birmingham sometime this week.
Osasuna have signed Valencia’s Stephen Sunday, aka Sunny, on loan. The 19-year old Nigerian-born midfielder signed for Valencia last year from Segunda Division side Ejido, and he made quite a few appearances for the club in his debut season, but the Spain U-20 international is one of many set to depart on a temporary or permanent basis this summer.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Sunny has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid, and he played for Spain in the U-20 World Cup last year, so he looks to have a great deal of potential.
Sevilla have plenty of spending power after selling off Daniel Alves, Seydou Keita, and now Christian Poulsen (more on that below), and they could be set to use some of their monies on Real Madrid’s Ruben de la Red. The 23-year old midfielder impressed in a loan spell at Getafe last season and was part of Spain’s Euro 2008 squad.
Rumor Rating: 5 – De la Red is rated at £15m by recent reports, but that’s well within Sevilla’s budget.
Juventus have completed a €9.75m deal for Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen. The 28-year old Dane joins on a four-year deal.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Now comes the hard part – winning over the masses in the stands in Turin, which may not happen overnight.
According to Marca, Roma are set to offer Real Madrid €15m for Julio Baptista. The interest appears to be mutual, and Baptista rejected an offer from Turkish champions Galatasaray last week.
Rumor Rating: 5 – With Mancini being sold to Inter last week, Roma have money to spend and a need to fill for new attacking talent.
Eintracht Frankfurt have signed veteran Greek striker Nikos Liberopoulos, who was recently released by AEK Athens. The 32-year old has played his entire career in Greece and has been named Greek’s best player three times (2003 with Panathinaikos, 2006 and 2007 with AEK Athens).
Rumor Rating: 5 – This wasn’t his first offer from Germany, as he was offered the chance to move to Nurnberg last summer, but he turned down to remain with AEK Athens.
Nice president Maurice Cohen says that today is the day that any club that wants to do a deal for striker Bakari Kone must make a deal for the Ivorian.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Marseille haven’t had much luck so far, and they don’t want to overpay for him, but that may be what they have to do in the end to snare him.
Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. What do you think about today’s rumors? Do Chelsea stand a chance of stealing Ronnie late? Is £30m the right price for Berba, or is it too much? Bentley to Spurs, with Robinson going the other way – good deal?
