Transfer Rumors (15 June 08): Diarra to Manchester City, Parejo to Arsenal, Joaquin to Tottenham, and more
It’s Sunday, so it’s a rest day for many, but transfer speculation doesn’t take a day off. However, it’s an abbreviated day, so put your feet up, crack open a cold one, and check out the latest transfer news.
Manchester City could be set to make an 8 million pound bid for Portsmouth’s Lassana Diarra, who’s been upfront about his desire to make steps up in his career.
Rumor Rating: 3 – It could take more than that to snare him, especially if Manchester United, as has been reported, is interesting in a move for the 23-year old French midfielder. With all of the moving around England he’s done, I wonder if his command of the language has improved.
The agent of Villareal’s Marcos Senna is trying to cause some unnecessary issues because he’s bitter that Juventus are after Senna’s Spain teammate Xabi Alonso and not his client, saying that Alonso is ‘worse than Senna.’
Rumor Rating: -3,972 – Maybe you’re right, Mr. Agent, but is this really the best time for this kind of nonsense to be put out? Besides, I don’t think Claudio Raineri will listen to you.
Arsenal could be considering a move for Real Madrid midfielder Daniel Parejo, as Arsene Wenger could offer Real 11 million pounds for the 19-year old starlet.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Parejo says he wants to stay and fight for a first-team place, but a move to Arsenal could very well be good for him.
Aston Villa may soon make a move for Sporting Braga right back Joao Pereira.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Napoli and FC Porto are also interested in him, but apparently Villa have realized that there’s quite a pool of talented Portuguese right backs, as Pereira could be their fallback option after their other Portuguese right back target, Benfica’s Nelson.
Denilson, Julio Baptista, Luis Fabiano, Kaka. The list of attacking players to make the leap from Brazilian power Sao Paulo to a top European league could grow by one soon, as Barcelona have tabled an opening offer of 10 million euros for midfielder Hernanes.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Inter and AC Milan are also interested in him, and if you’d like to know why, just check this out. I’m not sure if the defenders just gave up or he’s just that brilliant, but that shot sure was a thing of beauty.
Goal.com says that Tottenham could try to jump into the race for Valencia’s Joaquin, who is a prime target for Inter, as Juande Ramos could very well try to persuade the Spanish star that Premier League > La Liga.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Can he play defense and make some saves in net as well?
Everton and West Brom are in a battle to sign Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson.
Rumor Rating: 3 – The 23-year old Scot is an important piece of Walter Smith’s squad, but with a pretty tight transfer budget, a sizable bid might allow Smith some much-needed cash to beef up the squad for next season.
Well, that’s it for today. Chime in, chip in, and for those who in countries that celebrate it, Happy Father’s Day!

Football News 24/7
Football would be a better sport without these two clubs.
The Imposter in Manchester “United”.
&
The fall out of WWI “Spurs”.
June 15th, 2008 @ 10:19What a strange comment. Man United play breathtaking football at times, as do Spurs (to a lesser degree obviously). Decidedly two of the most entertaining sides in the League. I hope that your username doesn’t mean you are a Chelsea fan, as that would make your comment incredibly ironic
June 15th, 2008 @ 10:41I hope Drogba stays at Chelsea 2 good performances all season (one against us
) Keep it up drogba!
June 15th, 2008 @ 11:29The chavski fan is just bitter because man utd beat them to the league and champs league. They lost to spurs in the cc final and spurs have pipped them to modric and dos santos in the last month!
June 15th, 2008 @ 14:43I wish we kept Diarra
June 15th, 2008 @ 14:52Wow, what a great article with such well thought out insightful opinions on the so called rumours!!!!
Come off it you rated 6 out of the 7 as 3 (presumably out of 5). You clearly vote liberal as you sit onthe fence. What is the point of this article!!!!!!!!1
USELESS!!
June 15th, 2008 @ 18:59Nice to hear David Villa’s views on things
June 15th, 2008 @ 20:44Villa will stay in Spain. Unlucky.
June 15th, 2008 @ 20:55I promise you he wont come to us or you or Chelsea. Any good player would be crazy to go to Chelsea. They ruin players.
June 15th, 2008 @ 20:57Well I agree on that point. If Chelsea bring in too many players they wont win anything again and no doubt Scolari will be sacked
June 16th, 2008 @ 11:22To the smartass Aussie, here’s the rating system:
1 – nearly impossible
2 – highly unlikely, but not totally out of the question
3 – could go either way
4 – almost a sure thing that the player is headed for the exit
5 – done deal
I analyze the rumors and rate them based on their likelihood. Some days, more rumors lean towards one way than they do others.
If a player could go based on the cash being offered, but the club could keep him based on his value to them, or he’s likely headed for the exit door, but the money may not be enough…it’s going to get a 3. Simple as that.
Where would my political affiliation come into play here? This is a football site, not a political discussion forum.
Nice to see you’ve got good command of the exclamation key.
