Well, I’m back again with the latest in transfer news and rumors, and unfortunately for our regular readers, there’s nothing to report on in Liverpool news again, because I wasn’t about to report the latest in the Gareth Barry saga (he’s not going to Liverpool, apparently, which isn’t new news) only to have it turn around and be something completely different tomorrow.
But, there is plenty to talk about it in today’s roundup, so I’ll get to the goodies right now.
It seems that £3m is what stands between Manchester United and a successful deal for Dimitar Berbatov. United are at £25m, and Tottenham are at £28m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Small change, small change. Deal should be done soon, unless both sides want to drag it out until the 31st, which would just be silly.
Tottenham have made one final bid for Andrei Arshavin in hopes of finally landing the Russian star.
Rumor Rating: 4 – As I’ve said before, I wouldn’t be surprised if no deal happens, and he stays in Russia.
Guess who is being linked with a return to Tottenham? None other than Fredi Kanoute, who could make a return to White Hart Lane and be reunited with Juande Ramos.
Rumor Rating: 3 – He may have left Spurs on bad terms, but that was another time under another manager. Since his move to Sevilla in 2005, Kanoute has really flourished, and in the last two seasons, has bagged more than 50 goals and formed a prolific partnership with Luis Fabiano.
Aston Villa have made an offer of £9m for Newcastle midfielder James Milner.
Rumor Rating: 3 – With complications arising over Jonas Gutierrez and his registration, Kevin Keegan will be keen to keep Milner, at least until the situation is sorted out with FIFA.
Manchester City have reportedly made a £12m bid for Roque Santa Cruz that Blackburn may or may not be considering.
Rumor Raitng: 2 – Paul Ince seems to be pretty adamant about holding on to his other key players after letting David Bentley go, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be willing to part with Santa Cruz unless that offer is a good bit higher.
Everton could beat Newcastle for former Chelsea midfielder Tiago, who’s not in Mr. Tinkerman’s plans at Juventus after not having much success in his debut season there. Newcastle looked to have a loan deal done, but they haven’t been able to agree a fee about how much of his wages they’ll be paying, which has allowed Everton to jump into the fray.
Rumor Rating: 4 – If Everton can land Tiago, somehow find the funds for Joao Moutinho, and land Vagner Love, then there’ll be a nice little Portuguese-speaking contingent at the club. Now if only they could get Manuel Fernandes back….
Fulham and Hull are set to go in for Uruguayan striker Walter Pandiani. The 32-year old had a previous spell in England with Birmingham in the 2005-06 season, and he currently plays for Osasuna.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Pandiani had a quiet 2007/08 campaign for Osasuna, but the previous season, he played a pivotal part in helping Espanyol reach the UEFA Cup final.
Well, that ends that, eh? Valencia’s David Silva has agreed a new five-year deal with the club, which may well put an end to all of the speculation that he could be set for a move somewhere.
Rumor Rating: 2 – Keep your eyes out for another Silva tidbit in tomorrow’s roundup. I wouldn’t bet against it.
Racing Santander have made an offer for Blackburn and Arsenal target Anthony Annan.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Apparently Annan has said that his dream move would be to Manchester United, so there may well be another entrant into the race for his signature soon.
While they have a fight on their hands for Annan’s signature, Racing have opened talks with Hugo Viana and Ever Banega over loan moves to the club.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Racing have also tried to add promising winger Juan Mata into the bunch, but Valencia aren’t having any of that. But, Viana and Banega will be big assets to their hopes of making a run in the UEFA Cup.
Celtic are trying to steal in past Rangers and sign Cardiff defender Glenn Loovens, as they’ve opened talks with Cardiff over a move for the 24-year old.
Rumor Rating: 4 – It’d sting just a little bit if Loovens ended up signing for Celtic, to say the least.
Rangers have tied up one signing, as they’ve picked up Valencia attacking midfielder Aaron Niguez Esclapez on a two-year loan. The 19-year old is one of his country’s top young prospects, and he was named the player of the tournament at the U-19 European championships last year.
Rumor Rating: 5 – It’s a quality signing for Rangers, as they had to beat off several clubs to get a deal for Esclapez, who spent last season on loan at Spanish side Xerez and Greek side Iraklis.
Zenit St. Petersburg could try to make a move for Feyenoord’s Jonathan de Guzman once they sell Arshavin (if they do).
Rumor Rating: 3 – De Guzman would come a hefty price, but Zenit aren’t exactly starving for cash, especially if the deal for Arshavin gets done.
Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. I’ll be back tomorrow, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you check out the updated summer transfer lists.
