Transfer Rumors (13 July 09): Manchester City sign Tevez, want Arsenal’s Adebayor, Manchester United to stop spending, Chelsea close on AC Milan’s Pirlo and more
It looks to be a busy week ahead in the transfers world. A lot of money could be set to change hands in the Premier League and across Europe, though if Sir Alex Ferguson is to be believed, none of that business will be taking place at Old Trafford.
United Done Spending?
Analysis: There’s still more than a month and a half to go before the window closes, so he could change his mind, but it has been said that he wanted the squad finalized before leaving for United’s tour of Asia this week. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to bolster the midfield, but he must be banking on Owen Hargreaves’ fitness, among other things.
However, there are reports that United could be close to signing Gremio starlet Douglas Costa. (The Times)
Analysis: Gremio might be driving a hard bargain, so this one could drag out a while, but even if a deal is worked out this summer, Costa may not immediately link up with United.
Chelsea Close On Pirlo?
City In Adebayor Talks
Analysis: Looks like City must’ve read the brochure, eh? Selling to a fellow Premier League club can come back to haunt you, certainly, but City are the only club out there willing to fork out nearly as much as someone would have last summer. And well, with the salary that Adebayor could be set to net at City, I’m sure he won’t need much convincing.
Villa In For Veloso
Analysis: Villa have been pretty quiet thus far this summer, but this would be a good way to kickoff their summer spending.
Sunderland Land Da Silva
Sunderland have signed Paraguayan defender Paulo da Silva on a free transfer. (Sky Sports)
Analysis: Another Central/South American gem for Steve Bruce? Sunderland fans should expect a few more of these, judging by Bruce’s work at Birmingham and Wigan, but perhaps not as many with Bruce having a lot more money to spend at Sunderland than he has had previously.
Easton Set For Burnley
Hamilton Academical defender Brian Easton is expected to undergo a medical at Burnley tomorrow after Hamilton accepted Burnley’s bid for the 21-year-old. (Sky Sports)
Analysis: They’ll have to keep on trying if they want to land James McCarthy, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could soon follow his teammate to Turf Moor if Burnley can up their bid to a sufficient amount.
Lyon’s Gignac Bid Rejected
Toulouse have rejected a €15m bid from Lyon for striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. (Sky Sports)
Analysis: Despite spending a club-record sum on Lisandro Lopez to fill the hole left by Karim Benzema’s departure, Lyon need to add another scorer, so they may well not give up on Gignac. If they do, CSKA Moscow’s Vagner Love is another potential option, with PSG’s Guillaume Hoarau and Kleber linked with the club as well.
Monaco Close On Puygrenier
Monaco are set to sign Zenit St. Petersburg defender Sebastien Puygrenier. (Transfer Market Web)
Analysis: In hindsight, opting for the lucrative Zenit move instead of St. Etienne may not have been the best idea, but the return to Ligue 1 will no doubt prove profitable in its own right. Monaco wouldn’t have had a shot at him last summer when he was leaving Nancy, so it works out for them that it didn’t work out for him at Zenit.
In light of the Tevez move, here’s a look into the United – City rivalry.
