Transfer Rumors (12 August 08): Liverpool after another Hungarian youngster, Aston Villa close on Cuellar, three-way battle for Appiah, and more

It’s time again for another look at the latest transfer headlines from around Europe, so buckle up for the ride.

Liverpool, who have a growing Hungarian contingent at the club, are looking to nab another Hungarian starlet in 17-year old defender Otikba Kenneth.

Rumor Rating: 5 – If things pan out for all of Liverpool’s Hungarian youngsters, there may be an unholy amount of Hungarians with Liverpool jerseys in a few years, if that isn’t the case already. Anyone here live in Hungary? Visited Hungary? Have a Hungarian in-law? If so, let me know, thanks.

Aston Villa have signed Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar in a £7.8m deal. Villa have been busy shoring up their defense this summer, and the 25-year old is their third defensive signing in less than a week.

Rumor Rating: 4 – It’s a blow for Rangers to lose a player who made such a big impact for them in just one season in Scotland, but they’ve sold him for more than four times what they bought him for last year.

Ghanaian midfielder Anthony Annan says that he would prefer a move to Blackburn over Arsenal, thanks to the club’s commitment to him.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Well, hopefully that commitment counts for something in the end. His future should be sorted out before long, so we’ll know if it does, or if Arsenal or another club can steal in and beat Blackburn for his signature.

Speaking of Ghanaians, Fenerbahce midfielder Stephen Appiah is being linked with West Ham, Portsmouth, and Tottenham, and The Sun goes as far as saying that Portsmouth have won the race to sign the 27-year old.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Appiah is currently out of commission right now due to an injury that’s kept him sidelined for much of the last year, which has been a big blow for him, his club, and his country. But, if he does make a move at this point, he’ll still come at a decent price, even with the injury situation.

Sunderland are being linked with a potential move for Everton defender Leighton Baines. The 23-year old Baines only moved to Everton from Wigan last summer, but he wasn’t a regular part of Everton’s starting back line due in part to injury, only making 17 total starts and 29 total appearances.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Baines may not see an increase in his pitch time at Everton this season, so a move could be profitable for both player and club, as Everton seem to be in need of funds to make squad reinforcements as they get ready to start the new season.

Hull are looking to finally land a striker before they make their Premier League debut against Fulham on Saturday, as they are chasing Chelsea’s surplus-to-requirements Claudio Pizarro. However, Stoke City, who have been after Valencia’s Nikola Zigic as of late, are also in the mix to sign the 29-year old on a season-long loan.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Stoke seem to have more money to work with, but Hull are more in need than the Potters, as Stoke already signed Dave Kitson, and as mentioned above, have been in for Zigic as well.

So, what’s the latest with Valencia’s David Silva? Liverpool have been heavily linked with him lately, but according to Guillem Balague, there have been two bids for Silva, and neither is from Liverpool. Barcelona have bid €24m for the 22-year old, with the other bid coming from Manchester United.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Balague also says that he thinks Barcelona is where Silva is destined for. I’d have to agree with him, since Barca might be willing to pay more for him than United, as he says that United weren’t prepared to offer more than the €20m they put on the table.

Osasuna have agreed a deal with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen for Hungarian international midfielder Krisztian Vadocz. Osasuna will pay €950k for the 23-year old, who has 12 caps and two goals for his country.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Two Hungarians in one day? A new record, I think.

Racing Santander are likely going to complete a deal for Benfica midfielder Gilles Binya very soon. The 23-year old Cameroon international has only been at Benfica since last year, but with a lot of turnover happening in the squad, and an opening in Racing’s midfield, he seems destined for Spain.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Binya, who has nine caps for Cameroon, would fill the hole left by Aldo Duscher’s recent departure to Sevilla.

AC Milan are reportedly interested in signing Freddie Ljungberg.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Ljungberg certainly doesn’t seem to have a shortage of options for his next destination, as he’s also been linked with Lazio, Roma, and the L.A. Galaxy.

Bayer Leverkusen have dismissed rumors that they’re going to make a move for Rangers striker Kris Boyd. Bayer and fellow Bundesliga side Cologne have been linked with the 24-year old, who was the subject of interest from Cardiff City earlier in the summer.

Rumor Rating: 2 – Boyd isn’t a sure thing in Rangers’ starting XI despite scoring 71 goals for the club since his move from Motherwell in January 2006, but given the frequency that he does find the net for Rangers, he would seem to be worth keeping, or at least selling for more than £2.75m.

Monaco have agreed a deal with AC Milan for veteran defender Dario Simic. The fee is unknown, but the 32-year old is set to sign a two-year deal with the club, and the loose ends should be tied up by Wednesday.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Celtic appeared to be favorites for his signature last week, but in the end, he’s chosen to join compatriots Jerko Leko and Nikola Pokrivac at Monaco.

Rennes midfielder Bruno Cheyrou (remember him, Liverpool fans?) is reportedly drawing interest from Serie A side Chievo and fellow Ligue 1 side Nancy after opening the Ligue 1 campaign with an impressive performance in Rennes’ 4-4 goalfest against Marseille.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Cheyrou isn’t the scorer that he was earlier in his career, but as he showed on the weekend, he can still find the net from time to time.

Well, that’s it for another day in transfer news and rumors. I’ll be back tomorrow with all of the latest in the transfer world, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s rumors, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you check out the updated summer transfer lists to get caught up on all of the recent moves.
