Transfer Rumors (12 Jan 2010): Barca and Real want £70m Rooney, Chelsea eye Wolfsburg star Dzeko, Man United track Fiorentina #1 Frey, and more
It was a relatively slow day in transfer news and rumors on Tuesday, and when such a day comes about, you’re bound to get an outlandish story or two for the sake of filler.
Along with The Sun’s delivering of such a space filler and time killer, there were actually a few more believable transfer tidbits from here, there, and everywhere on Tuesday, including the latest on Chelsea’s hunt for a new striker and Manchester United’s hunt for a future #1 goalkeeper.

Chelsea Set Sights On Dzeko
After reportedly pulling out of a deal for Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero due to his demands for a £200k a week salary, Chelsea could be set to make a move for VfL Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko. Dzeko’s agent, Silvano Martina, says that Chelsea are following the Bosnian star, who’s also a prime target for AC Milan. (The Mirror)
Analysis: I’m sure Carlo Ancelotti’s powers of persuasion are quite amazing, but AC Milan have looked to be the team to beat for Dzeko for a while now. But though a summer move would seem more likely, Milan could be forced to move quickly if Chelsea’s interest becomes a little more concrete.
United Eye Frey
According to the agent of Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey, Manchester United are lining up his client to be the long-term replacement for Edwin Van der Sar, but if any negotiations are going to take place, they’ll only happen at the end of this season. (Daily Mail)
Analysis: Perhaps a younger keeper might seem to be more appealing, but as he’s only turning 30 this season, Frey’s still got several good seasons left in him, and he certainly trumps other potential options when it comes to experience and a track record of success. And hey, it’s also a big plus that internationals wouldn’t be a concern with him.
Campbell Makes Arsenal Return Official
As expected, Sol Campbell looks all but set to make his return to Arsenal official any time now. Campbell suited up for Arsenal’s reserves against West Ham last night, and the veteran defender could soon sign a deal that would run to the end of this season. (ESPN Soccernet)
Analysis: Well, it looks like Philippe has sure taken the hint. Campbell won’t be counted on to play as vital of a role as he did in his first go-round, but as was the case with Mikael Silvestre last season, injuries could dictate otherwise.
Mancini Mulls Move For Madrid Man
After bolstering their midfield in the short term with the signing of Patrick Vieira, Manchester City could look to fill the long-term need by moving for Real Madrid’s Fernando Gago. (Daily Mail)
Analysis: After going from being a regular in his first couple of full seasons at the club, Gago has only been a bit-part player this season, and any City offer would more than likely allow Real to recoup most, if not all, of their investment in him. It’d be a good buy for City as well, as he’s proven at the highest levels but still has his best years ahead of him.
Spurs Suffer Saviola Setback
Tottenham have had a £5m bid for Benfica striker Javier Saviola turned down. (The Mirror)
Analysis: Given the career resurgence Saviola has had in a half season at Benfica and the role he’s played in their success both domestically and in Europe, it’d take a lot more than £5m for the club to even consider selling him in January or in the summer.

Barca And Real Target Rooney?
According to The Sun, Barcelona and Real Madrid are both considering £70m moves for Wayne Rooney, with the thought that Manchester United could be forced to cash in on some big names to balance the books.
Analysis: Sometimes, sitting and twiddling the thumbs at work isn’t actually a bad idea.
