The whole Alonso saga demonstrates that actions really do have consequences. Alonso always played well for Liverpool but Rafa Benitez and (possibly) Stevie G decided, last year, that they wanted Gareth Barry. So, they dangle Alonso out to Juventus all summer while arguing over a couple million pounds with Villa over Barry. They end up not getting Barry, and are forced to keep Alonso. Alonso responds with a career year and (unsurprisingly) wants out. So, not only do they miss out on Barry (who didn't want to go through the whole song-and-dance with Liverpool again), but they also lose Alonso (who was probably their MVP last year given injuries to Torres and Gerrard). Great move Rafa!
