Transfer Rumors (5 July 09): Eto’o would drop demands for Man United move, Liverpool target Inter Milan’s Cambiasso, Chelsea to bid for Real Madrid’s Sneijder, and more

A new week stands to bring many more signings as the summer transfer window merrily rolls along, and according to the latest transfer news and rumors, we may expect to see a few big names make moves sometime this week.

Until they actually move, we can’t add their names to our summer transfer lists, but this morning’s roundup gives us at least one new name to add to the lists, with tidbits on several more who could be very, very soon.

England

Eto’o Would Drop Wage Demands For United

According to reports, Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o would drop his reported wage demands of £200k per week plus a £12m signing-on fee if Manchester United came calling for his services. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Whether or not United will make a serious move for Eto’o all depends on just what their transfer plans are after signing Michael Owen. It’d make for quite the crowded front line, but it sure makes for a selection headache most managers could only dream of having.

United To Move For Toure

Manchester United have inquired about Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: There’s no telling when Owen Hargreaves is coming back and how effective he’ll be when he comes back.

Cambiasso A Liverpool Target

If Liverpool sell midfielder Xabi Alonso, they could make an offer for Inter Milan’s Esteban Cambiasso. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Cambiasso’s one of Inter’s key players, but with his contract up next year, the right bid from Liverpool could well tempt Inter to cash in this summer.

Chelsea To Bid For Sneijder

Chelsea are reportedly lining up a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Sneijder has thus far been adamant about wanting to stay at Real Madrid, but one would think that it wouldn’t take much convincing for him to be open to a move to Chelsea if they do come calling.

Tottenham After Llorente

Tottenham are after Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: He’s young, he’s got the physical presence that Harry Redknapp has been shopping around for, he’s already proven that he can be a solid scorer in an elite league, and Tottenham wouldn’t exactly be breaking the bank with a move for him.

Hearts Slap £6m Tag On Driver

Hearts have slapped a £6m price tag on winger Andrew Driver, who’s being targeted by Burnley. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Driver is certainly a promising talent, but I’m not sure Burnley are going to go that high. Then again, they got Steven Fletcher for less than Hibs’ reported asking price, so don’t count them out.

Spain

Atletico Madrid In Pirlo Talks

Atletico Madrid have made contact with the agent of AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo to see if Pirlo would be interested in a move. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Money certainly isn’t an object for Atletico Madrid, but I have my doubts as to whether Pirlo would be interested. Can’t hurt to try though.

Duo Eye Nani

Atletico Madrid and Villarreal could make a move for Manchester United winger Nani. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Nani hasn’t exactly proven his worth in his first two seasons, and the arrival of Antonio Valencia certainly puts his future in doubt. The door isn’t shut on him being able to establish himself at United, but if first-team chances aren’t going to be plentiful, going to Spain could be his best move. There’s European football on offer at both clubs, and both are well established as top sides in La Liga, so either would be a quality option.

Italy

Fiorentina Make Suazo Approach

Fiorentina have approached Inter Milan about taking striker David Suazo on loan next season. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: With Napoli reportedly in front for Julio Cruz, Suazo is a solid fallback option. He’s got several seasons of Serie A experience, and though he hasn’t exactly prospered at Inter, he does have a solid scoring record in Serie A (52 goals in 135 games with Inter and Cagliari).

Germany

Elia To Hamburg

Hamburg SV have won the race for highly-rated FC Twente star Eljero Elia for €8.5m. The 22-year-old attacker has penned a five-year deal with HSV.

Analysis: Very, very impressive signing for HSV. Elia has been linked with several top European clubs, but in the end, a move to Hamburg is a great option for him right now. He can be a regular from the outset, make an impact in a top European league, and in a few seasons, net Hamburg a huge profit when he moves elsewhere.

Schalke Set For Poulsen Talks

Schalke 04 are set to open talks with Juventus for midfielder Christian Poulsen. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Poulsen turned down a move to Fenerbahce already, but he’ll likely be much more receptive to a move to Schalke, who missed out on European football last season but could once again be a contender in the Bundesliga with Felix Magath at the helm.

France

Lyon Line Up Martins

Lyon are targeting Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins as they look to replace Karim Benzema. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Martins would be a relatively inexpensive signing, and with his track record of his success in Italy and England, I think he could be a big success in France. He could well prefer to stay in the Premier League, but the lure of Champions League football and a realistic chance for trophies could be too much to turn down.

Marseille To Make Huntelaar Offer

Marseille are set to make a €13m bid for Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Huntelaar already reportedly turned down Lyon, so I don’t see Marseille having any better luck with him.

Sochaux Close On Davies

Discussions between Sochaux and American forward Charlie Davies are at an advanced stage, according to Davies’ agent. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Davies would have the opportunity make an immediate contribution at Sochaux, with the club in need of some new firepower after selling Mevlut Erding to PSG.
