Transfer Rumors (05 June 08): Altidore to Villareal, Arshavin to Schalke, Campbell to Hull, and more

Manchester United have a fight on their hands for Cardiff’s Aaron Ramsey, even though they seem to be leading the race for the youngster. Arsenal and Everton have also had their bids approved, and Liverpool could join the race soon as well.

Rumor Rating: 5 – In a report by the Daily Mirror, Manchester United have already signed Ramsey (2 million up front, rest dependent on clauses, will loan him back to Cardiff for next season), so…

In other United-related news, I didn’t include this in yesterday’s roundup, but Hull are doing all they can to sign United starlet Frazier Campbell, who was a valuable part of Hull’s promotion push last season.

Rumor Rating: 5 – United want 5 million pounds for him, but a long-term loan could be the best option for both clubs, as the 20-year old striker is someone Sir Alex Ferguson sees as valuable for the future.

Schalke 04 appear to lead the race for Russian star Andrei Arshavin, as they have a close relationship with Zenit St. Petersburg’s owners. That could give them an advantage over the likes of United, who have already reportedly make a 16 million euro offer.

Rumor Rating: 5 – It’s a surprise that there aren’t more big names in the hunt for him, but whoever gets him will get a terrific talent.

Manchester City have their new manager, and now it’s time to make some new signings. City are being linked with a 18 to 20 million pound move for CSKA Moscow forward Jo, and reports say he could be unveiled as a City man very soon.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Hopefully the fans in England will be kinder than some of the Russians were.

The Daily Mail reports that Aston Villa are ready to accept 8 million pounds + Peter Crouch in exchange for Gareth Barry.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Well, given that Rafa Benitez has valued Crouch at 15 million, Villa are getting a package worth upwards of 20 million pounds. Good value or not?

News of the World says that West Ham defender Anton ‘don’t call me Rio’s brother’ Ferdinand is set for a 6 million pound move to Tottenham.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Too much for him, or is it enough?

It looks like American phenom Jozy Altidore will be making a big-money move to Europe in the near future. Manchester United? Chelsea? Real Madrid? Well, he does appear set for Spain and the Champions League, as Villareal and MLS have agreed a $10 million fee for the 18-year old striker, which would be a record transfer for an American player.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Villareal would likely loan him out to a club where he can get regular first-team appearances, so that would be better for his development than playing in the reserves or sitting on the bench for the first team.

They’re also chasing River Plate (Uruguay) midfielder Martin Flores, and would likely do the same thing with him as they would with Altidore.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Villareal are certainly looking towards the future, which looks to be pretty bright after their runner-up finish in La Liga.

Where might they be getting the money from to fund their moves? From selling defender Martin Caceres to Barcelona for 20 million euros (17 mil up front, 3 mil based on clauses).

Rumor Rating: 5 – Quite a profit for Villareal, who bought him for 2 million euros.

Juventus just bought Amauri from Palermo, but they’re in the search for another new striker, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Fabio Quagliarella, and Bafetimbi Gomis as their three main options.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Does this mean that they’re just preparing for the future, or that they’re thinking of selling David Trezeguet before too long?

Jose Alberti thinks that Boca star Rodrigo Palacio will join Lazio, who could offer Boca 14 or 15 million euros for the forward’s services.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Lazio don’t have money to throw around recklessly, but Palacio is certainly worth the investment.

Well folks, that’s it for today – chime in, chip in, and I’ll be back tomorrow.
