Tottenham Hotspur are keen to sign at least one quality central midfielder before the transfer deadline day.

Spurs have made a poor start to the season, having registered only three points on the table from their opening four games, as a result there could be few activities off the pitch before the window slams shut.

According to reports in Italy, Tottenham have submitted a €26m bid for Zenit Saint Petersburg’s highly rated Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel. However, they face a strong competition from Serie A giants AC Milan, who are only looking to sign the player on loan.

Milan are only looking to sign the midfielder on loan with a view to make the deal permanent next summer. Zenit want a straight away deal and therefore Spurs have a great chance of signing the playmaker.

London giants Chelsea were also reportedly thought to be interested in signing the Belgium midfielder.

Back in July, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sport claimed that the Blues had offered €34m for Witsel.

It seems like the interest from Chelsea has died down in recent months. The Blues are keen to add one or two players in the transfer market and are targeting to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba

Wiesel would represent a cheaper alternative no doubt, but as it stands, the Belgium midfielder is likely to be heading towards the North London club instead.
