Spurs sign pre-contract with Schalke’s Lewis Holtby

Share

Daniel Levy is the eponym of Genius while dealing with transfer negotiations. He proved yet again of his astounding calibre of pulling rabbit out of hat after Tottenham agreed a deal to sign one of the hot cakes in Europe, Lewis Holtby, in July on a free transfer and subject to medical, beating rivals Arsenal and Liverpool to his signature.

The 22-year-old Schalke 04 midfielder was in his last year of contract and was eligible to sign a pre-contract with any foreign clubs. Both Arsenal and Liverpool have all long coveted the player, but it was Tottenham who pounced on the first opportunity and signed Holtby on a pre-agreement contract.

According to reports from The Times, the self-proclaimed Everton fan has signed a five-year-deal at White Hart Lane and will earn about £80,000 a week.

Holtby started his senior career with Alemannia Aachen in 2007-08, after graduating from the club’s youth academy. He made 33 league appearances in two years, and scored eight goals.

The youngster then joined the Schlake on a four-year-contract where he made 53 league appearances for the club, scoring nine goals. In between, Holtby was loaned out to Bundesliga outfits VfL Bochum & Mainz 05 to get more playing experience.

The midfielder with a moniker “Lucky Lewis” has been drafted in to the Germany national team in 2010, after impressing at the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt. Till date, he has three national caps under his belt.

A statement on Spurs’ official website read:

“We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Germany Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby to join the club in July from Bundesliga side Schalke, subject to a medical.”

With the capture of Holtby, Spurs have now made two signings in the January transfer window, as they signed the former Manchester United and Standard Liège defender Zeki Fryers for a fee of £3 million on Thursday.

  1. I am getting nervous and frustrated and recount the events of the last transfer window. I dont trust Wenger anymore though i like the manager. There should be at least one signing already by now as any club knows their targets in advance and start contacts in advance. What is this story of Arsenal trying to clear deadwood first before any signature, where is the money to buy new players as Arsenal can’t stop rebuilding because there is more than a dozen deadwood? The signing of Theo has nothing to do with bringing new players as Theo has been around when we are sliding downwards. Please watch Wenger he may sign Theo’s new contract and pretend he’s brought new players. I now looks certain that Spurs are better organised and are attacting best talent, they dont fool around they get their target today. it looks like Arsenal has no target and Wenger again is a spectator in the transfer market judging from his comments, 14 mill pounds is nothing for a good player like Lopez, Villa, Isco, Strootman, Jelavic, Yang Mbiwa, Zaha etc. deadwood clearance sale is a project not related to Arsenal acquiring new talent to secure top spot. New talents have realised that Arsenal is no longer a serious club and wont qualify for a top four above Spurs hence their choice to Spurs. Arsenal/Arsene need to start with at least one or two great signing to sure intent, we need atleast six players from goalkeeper, Defence, midfield and two top strikers in order to compete and not punish a few available players who perform.

    • good to see a arsenal fan with the brains to talk sence…he has made many valid points, sorry mate but wenger listens to no one when it comes to transfers..for all the great players he has found, theres at least twice as many he got who are not good enough….i do think that theres more going on behind the scenes than any one knows has regards the cost and payment of the stadium, and the transfer kitty
