Tottenham line up Mathew Upson as Newcastle look on

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Tottenham’s sale of Calum Davenport to West Ham is the precursor for Mathew Upson moving to Tottenham (or else, it was the most short-sighted sale ever).

Mathew Upson may still be waiting for a call from Peter Kenyon (or Pini Zahavi, as it were), but with Bruce and Birmingham keen to hold on to their star defender, no SOS from Chelsea (yet) and West Ham failing with a 4 mil bid, Tottenham (along with hapless Newcastle) are now frontrunners for Upson’s signature.

Between Tottenham and Newcastle, it’s not a tough choice for Upson. On one hand there’s a club that is now established as 5th strongest side on paper in the Premiership. On the other hand, you have a team that manages to lose 1-5, at home, to a Championship side (so what if it was Birmingham and they are tipped for promotion?).

Would Upson really fancy a move to St James Park to salvage the remains of another failed season? Or would he ditch Newcastle and move to Tottenham to pair up with Ledley King and Michael Dawson and give Tottenham’s defence the solidity they need to be a consistent challenge to the top four?

Unless Chelsea move for Upson, it’s Tottenham’s game from now on.

hapless Newcastle… just because their reserves got beat by birmingham in the Cup…… yeah, right!

Tottenham Hotpurts 5th strongest club, don’t make me laugh ! the Toon beat them at home in the league with an academy team.

  3. How many times have you been in the Champions League?

  4. Yet “hapless” Newcastle have managed the double over Tottenham this season!!! Despite the worst run of injuries the premiership has seen, we are stable in the Premiership and going strong in Europe. Also, Newcastle can consistently pay higher wages than most, so your claims that it’s a foregone conclusion seem a little premature. Had we had the likes of Owen, Duff, Parker, N’Zogbia, Emre, Moore etc available for larger parts of the season(not to mention Dyer for the first 25 games of our season - we have now played 38) and there is a strong argument that NUFC wouls be in a healthier position in the league table and probably above THFC. Another huge blow was losing Given for a lengthy period. Any team would miss one of the worlds best keepers. All this and yet there is only 3 points between the sides. THFC are 8 POINTS adrift of Bolton in 5th. Maybe a reality check is in order. The other night, NUFC had 4 academy players on the pitch and another 4 on the bench. THFC have only really suffered from KIng’s absence this season. NUFC have arguably their 4 first chioce defenders out. Up front, NUFC are down to one striker in Martins, backed up by Sibierski who is not a striker. THFC on the other hand have a full stock of forwards yet have only managed to score 2 more than NUFC and amounted only 3 more points. Newcastle hapless? Injury ravaged yet have conceded less goals in the premiership than THFC this season. We’ve played Tottenham twice this season, scored 6 conceded 3 and won both games. Hapless? The whole thing is getting boring and quite honestly, incorrect. With the return of some important players and hopefully a couple of good additions at the back and there is a massive chance that Newcastle will finish above Tottenham this season. Wherever Upson decides to ply his trade.

  5. The same “hapless” Newcastle team managed to beat Tottenham in their own back yard & hold the league leaders to a very creditable draw at St. James’ despite being dessimated by injuries……Upson may well end up at Spurs but I doubt very much that his decision will be made on one result in the F.A. cup as your Southern biased article suggests

So Newcastle have a poor ( albeit very poor ) result against Birmingham and now are hapless.
Wasn’t it Newcastle that have just done the double over Tottenham in the last 3 weeks !!
Also , Tottenham , 5th strongest side on Paper , what relevance does that have to anything ?
Maybe he would come to us if we actually stopped talking about tranfers and actually made an offer for him as we are , Stadium wise , the 3rd largest in the Premiership !!
( That fact is just about as relevant as the 5th largest on paper quote made in your report )

  7. I hope Newcastle don’t bid for Upson, he’s average at best. On the other hand if we did bid for him I expect he’d make the same choice as Parker, Emre and Duff and snub the club who have made one top 6 finish since the start of the premiership.

Whose virtually fully fit squad lies 3 points above Newcastle’s injury ravaged one, who are competing in their first European campaign for about 10 years and who have yet to sample the delights of champions league football.

Small London clubs are only significant in the eyes of their insular, deluded supporters.

  8. Sounds like speculation to me. Spurs need defensive back-up but we’re linked with defenders abroad rather than Upson. He’s quality though so if it were true I’d be a happy chappie.

  9. Did Newcastle not beat Tottenham 2-3 recently??????? Did Newcastle not do the double over Tottenham this season???????? Did Newcastle not beat Tottenham the last 3 times they have played them???????? YES, YES, and YES.

  10. January 19, 2007 NEIL THOMPSON

SORRY BUT THERE’S ONLY 3 POINTS BETWEEN NEWCASTLE AND SPURS AND WE HAVE HAD A UNBELIEVABLE AMOUNT OF INJURIES THIS SEASON. AND HAVENT WE TAKEN 6 POINTS OF SPURS THIS SEASON???

  11. Ironic that he’s now at West Ham with Davumport, innit.
