Tottenham Hotspurs have completed the signing of Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama for a reported fee of £11 million.

Wanyama, who has penned down a five-year contract with the North London club, has become the club’s first signing this summer as they look to bolster their squad with Champions League football in the offing next season.

Wanyama wrote an open letter to Southampton fans on his official website as he left the club after three successful campaigns: “I write to you with a heavy heart to announce that I will be leaving Southampton Football Club. As you can imagine it is very emotional for me to say goodbye to the club that gave me the chance to be the first Kenyan to play in [the] Premier League.

“Firstly, I would like to thank the most important part of every club, the fans. I want to reassure you that any ‘quotes’ you have read about in the media before my move was announced are false. I would never disrespect you by talking to the media before I have talked to you guys.

“I also want to thank every member of the Southampton staff: those who work behind the scenes and never get credit for their contribution to our success on the pitch. We are nothing without you.

“I will never forget my time in Southampton Football Club, I will keep club forever in my heart.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has now signed Wanyama for the second time in four years, initially when he arrived at the south coast from Celtic in a £12.5 million move in 2013.

The tough-tackling midfielder, who turns 25 on Saturday, has scored four times in 97 appearances for Southampton and was a key player at St Mary’s as they broke the club’s Premier League points record twice in the last two seasons.
