Tottenham bribe Berbatov to make him stay another year

Someone should teach Dimitar Berbatov how not to embarrass your club when talking to the press. You would imagine that Tottenham, with their swagger and the amount of money they throw at players, should have at least thought of giving their star players some media training but apparently Berba missed that session.

As it stands – Berbatov has ‘committed’ his future to Tottenham, based on a new contract that increases his salary (as Berba proudly claims). This commitment does not mean that Berbatov is here for life – it just says that it keeps him at Tottenham ‘for now’ (as Berba also claims).

Berbatov (talking to Bulgarian Football Weekly):

“I chose to join Tottenham last season, now I’m staying at the club through my own free will. At least for now. There has been a lot of speculation but all I can say is the club’s board have decided to raise my salary.

No one said that United didn’t have interest in me and my price in general but it has to be clear that there will not be a move for now.”

Well, there’s that then. Berba stays, Jol tries to steer them to the Champions League, etc etc. I doubt that Jol will succeed and subsequently I doubt that Berba will stay next season either. But for this year, he stays, and that will make life a lot more interesting in terms of how he performs if he feels that he shouldn’t be at Tottenham, and what impact this will have on Defoe, whose career is pretty much stalled while he’s a 4th choice striker at Tottenham.

Please stop writing about football. You are clearly Baised in your views on a supposed neutral site, which separates you from real journalists. That and the fact that your lack of facts condemn you to the rank of complete and utter idiot!

Err, we don’t throw money at players you idiot! We have a structured wage at Spurs unlike most clubs who just throw anything to get a player – Wet Spam, Manure, scousers, Citeh etc.

    Get it!?

It will be interesting to see what happens if and when Jol leaves. Think about it, hypothetically, if Jol gets fired in the next 24 hours. Thats the 28th, you have 3 days to get yourself out of a club in a mini crisis. You already admit that the reason your staying for now is money. In this scenario, wouldnt you jump at the chance for playing for united ? now im not saying Jol will be fired, just that if he does like is rumoured, then there is every reason Berbatov might just jump ship. Very unlikely but hey, one can always dream !

‘Bribed?’ So that’s what you call it when players are given a new deal is it? So you ‘bribed’ Roy Keane to make him stay for so long and bumped him up to £120,000 a week? You bribed Rio to make him stay when all you United fans were booing him. Other clubs can give players improved deals you know. Besides he may be waiting for another club to come in for him, as watching you lot yesterday, you seem the most likely to drop out of the top four.

IAQTL give me some of what your smoking because you got to be high to be making that comment. Lets look at what one can do with 16 million pounds shall we ? Ah yes we can buy a untried player in europe who just barely broke into his national squad and until recently played for a team who were relegation candidates every season or we can buy a one of the best players to represent france, a world cup winner, Doubble EPL winner, FA cup winner, Champion’s League Finalist and one of the greatest players to grace the Premiership. Tough call isnt it, Henry or Bent ? But ofcourse Spurs dont waste money .. no no no. Because that means you would be wrong and we cant have that now can we ? your almost as bad as a bloody scouser.

A, I see your Darren Bent and I raise you Veron and Forlan. By the way when you say untested at international and Cl level, what would you say Rooney was when Fergie shelled out £30m for him? Also Bent has outcored Rooney consistently in the prem playing for Charlton which just shows how good he is.

Ok Giz, lets take a look back for a minute. Seba was one of the top players in the world when United signed him, so comparing him to Bent is a pretty futile argument. Forlan on the other hand was not a big money signing, he has quality and he proved it at Villareal, just because he didnt suit england doesnt mean he was a bad player. And Taehr has a point, you knew rooney was something special at 16 when he stood up and scored that cracker against arsenal, so while Bent might have a better scoring record, Im sure Rooney’s assists and goals count for more than just Bent’s goals.

Kaka as been at Milan 5 years now and he has had his contract improved 5 times. I guess they bribe him all the time.

    :)

A player says that they offered him more money and he decided to stay for now. The deal is probably to get him to stay another year (with a bumper contract) and if Jol gets them to teh CL then he might stay. If Jol doesn’t, then Berba can leave but the new contract will mean that Spurs earn a shitload of money.

Giz – I don’t see how United offering Keano or Rio more money has anything to do with Tottenham offering Berba more money.

I also don’t think that Spurs did something wrong – I don’t know why you’d assume that. They probably matched the salary United would have offered him, or raised it, and bought an year in return. He’s probably their best striker, so why not? If it doesn’t work out, they’ll still make a lot of money off him.

So Kaka gets bribed, and your point is? :) All this negativity attached with offering money to influence decisions is so depressing!

    Ahmed

When you use loaded terms like “bribe” – do you do it just to get responses or are you a bit unaware of the connotations of certain words?

The logic of Giz is that you implied by the title that Tottenham were “bribing” Berb to stay while if Man Utd offered the same amount or offered their own players increases to sign/stay then that would somehow not be “bribery”.

Either you are deliberately provocative or you don’t have sufficient grasp of the English language to understand the full meanings of certain terms [observation, not an insult].

And for the millionth time (for whichever Spuds fan made the dig about West Ham), West Ham have clearly stated their salary structure in public. But it’s nice that people don’t bother actually quoting fact and stick to media gossip.

And, Tottenham, champions league this year, bwa ha ha ha ha ha

FC – yes, it’s meant to provoke a reaction (I understand the nuances of the language plus the impact certain words have on other peoples’ emotions far too well, thank you).

Ahmed, Is the point you are making similar to what Ashley Cole and Arsenal did a few years ago, with him signing a new deal to make sure they receive a decent fee. Albeit Cole was always going to leave, Arsenal wanted to make sure it was on their terms. The 1 year extension they agreed, in spite of Cole saying he would never sign another deal with the club again, suited both sides. In this case Berbatov will leave should Spuds fail to fulfill their end of the bargain (CL football).

Berbatov’s performances this season to date, will have done any club who eventually buys him (say next summer) a big favour …. by causing his value to drop.
