Tottenham and Martin Jol under attack
As Spurs fans already know (and the rest of the Premiership is finding out), Tottenham’s defense is ravaged with injuries, to the extent that there are rumours that they might consider spending 10m on a Championship defender.
While that is pure tabloid muck, it goes some way to highlight the problems Tottenham are facing right now, and coupled with the high expectations pre-season (in the media, again) and the subsequent thrashing of those expectations (the Sunderland defeat could have been chalked off but the home defeat to Everton must have hurt badly) now makes it an excellent time to crap on Tottenham for the press right now.
So what have they come up with so far?
Apart from the Curtis Davies rumour, there’s another rumour going around that the Tottenham board have given Martin Jol an ultimatum and that they are looking at Juande Ramos as a potential replacement. Which essentially translates into something like this:
We backed our manager with 40m but after two games against two tough opponents and injuries to 6 defenders and their two best attacking players (Lennon and Berbatov), we’re going to sack him. God forbid if football was to come to that.
Not only that, but apparently Juande Ramos would choose Tottenham over Sevilla. No offense to Spurs fans but currently (and for the last couple of years) Sevilla has been above Tottenham in quality and results so why would Ramos leave a setup he’s built up and a project he’s halfway through?
I don’t think that the thought of sacking Jol is something that would have ‘just’ come to the board. They put a lot of faith in him over the summer and while there would have been questions asked of Jol after the Everton game sacking him can’t be a direct consequence of it.
Bookies have Jol as 3rd favourite manager to be sacked this season though - I wouldn’t be that harsh. However, at the end of the season, things could be quite different depending on where Tottenham end up.
A couple of bad results and everyone’s on Jol’s back as if they’ve just realised that he is not as good a coach as he’s made out to be. Relax guys, his flaws have always been well-known, just never accepted until Tottenham lose a couple of games…
All the latest football headlines.

But our problem with Jol is NOT based on simply 2 matches. It’s his inability to put a decent squad together during the offseason to solve the problems that we’ve had for awhile, e.g., making some sense of our midfield. I also have problems with his tactics and formations and his preseason preparation. So please, let’s not say that we want Jol sacked after 2 matches. These problems extend far beyond simply two matches.
Having been a Spurs fan for more than 50 years it seems normal to have whining, fifth columnist fans. they have always been ther in a minority but since the advent of websites are vastly over represented. Every one has an opinion and indeed anyone can post a comment as a fan of a club whether they are genuine supporters or childish mischiefmakers. Most can see through them. Real fans support their club during the tough times. What a shame the writer has perceived that Jol is human and has flaws. No doubt Holland will look to one of the other PERFECT, flawless managers rather than Jol. Perhaps the writer casn give a list of these godlike creatures who manage other team without a flaw so that the Spurs board might peruse them. When it’s tab;oid it muck but when this website publishes somewhat similar it’s real comment. Unadulterated drivel more like!!!!
It’s not over 2 matches, it’s over 2 seasons.
There’s no way fans should be expected to put up with this.
As nice a chap as he is, he’s never solved any of the problems of going on to lose matches that seemed won eg Chelsea, Arsenal or more importantly developed and nurtured a winning mentality and a bitter hatred of coming second that has been so blatantly missing.
It’s ridiculous to say it can’t take years to establish this - see Allardyce and Sven’s statement of intent on the pitch so far - because he doesn’t have years. In fact he only really has this season because I can’t see Berbatov staying if this is all Spurs have to offer.
He should be seizing the moment not cooly watching it go by.
[...] have been the subject of some ridiculous rumours as a result of their injuries and 2 defeats, but regardless of what the press is saying, Tottenham [...]
Spurs, spurs spurs, when are you going to realise you have overspent and over-acheived in the last 2 years and really you are in with the likes of West Ham and Bolton?
i reckon a 1-1 draw! derby are playing ok theyl be up for this game knowing the current situation at Spurs. Spurs couldn’t do any worse if they let a Gunners fan pick the team!
WEll, a 4 0 win and we totally outplayed the rams. Agree with Roy - most of these “fans” have never been to WHL or a football match. Its not like playing on your PSP guys, it takes a lot or work and Jol has done so much for this club.
People need to grow up!
