I think this article is slightly biased. As a non City fan I've gained a lot of respect for the club recently and I'd put that down to Garry Cook and the structure the new board have put in place. The whole club seems more professional and considered.
Add 'typical city', and 'city til I die' and you've got a lot of self defeatism. He's got a point, but then that kind of chant can only be lost by results on the pitch.

to the previous poster, I say this in the best possible way. Public Relations and 'shut the f**k up' don't fit well together. As for leave the fans and players to do their thing? their thing being 'typical City'? The guy may not be around for very long in the History of the club, but I guess in the time he will be there he'll have helped the club reach a new level.

Success on the pitch can be short lived (look at Blackburn, Deportivo la Coruna), market that success and progress at the same time, across the world, and you'll get peoples attention. Look at Obama, words speak loudly.

Success on the ptich, leads to success off it. Advertising and branding alone mean nothing and Cook antagonising the fans, other clubs and anyone he comes across, is not a good idea.

If he understood the power of public relations he'd shut his f*cking mouth and let the manager and the players get on with it and let the fans - who were there before him and will be there long after him - do their thing.

"Terrible article, you obviously understand nothing about advertising and the rewards it can reap. Advertising is about brain-washing, and Mr Cook has a valid point.

Yes, you are correct that ‘City til’ I die’ IS essentially a positive thing to shout, BUT it is also technically a negative sentence.

I would love to see you slapped around our boardroom, you have the understanding of a 5 year old when it comes to marketing and brand awareness. My boss would beat you silly."

Unfortunately this isn't about advertising, kid. It's about football. Which apparently you have the understanding of a 5-year old of.

Addition: Actually, after a bit of thought, I think Cook's probably learned from his mistakes. City's handling of the Eto'o non-transfer and the Tevez signing showed they've matured in their negotiations. And Terry as well. City have kept reasonably quiet throughout and have handled all three with relative dignity.

Certainly the fans seem to appreciate him - and (as hopefully acknowledged above) he does a lot more than utter marketing speak in public. He's probably helped boost their profile.

However, to non-Man City fans his stream of remarks really don't do anything to endear him to the wider footballing community. If he engaged his brain or spoke with a bit more feeling for the football community, then it wouldn't be so bad. He does become a rather convenient stick with which to beat them with though.

I can see his reasoning behind typical city. Just not City Til I Die - I've no idea how anybody could misunderstand that one.

Still, it's going to be a very interesting season. I think Hughes is a good manager and has a very strong team at his disposal. Think the title may be a bit beyond them this season, but I can certainly see them disrupting the Big Four. Which, to me, would be very welcome.
