I dont believe Gerrard wanted it for money. I think he wanted to win trophies every year and be competing for the EPL he probably felt that Liverpool were never going to do that.

on Stevie G: His loyalty has a price, no matter what way you look at it. I'm sure that Bentley (to give an example), if he'd been given the same TLC at Arsenal that that Fab is getting or that Stevie G got at Liverpool as kid, he'd be singing from Wenger's hymn book.

If Fabregas wasn't being paid the money he's getting, he probably wouldn't be at Arsenal. It has a price.

on Rio: I think his case was blown up in the press too much since United are notoriously stingy with their contracts (think Wes Brown) but the bottom line is that the fans expected him to put up and shut up while what they got was a player who despite potentially costing the team a league title was also making sure that he got paid extra for it, which rightfully pissed people off. He's here for the love, the rub of the green, whatever you want to call it.

On Gareth Barry: Ambition pure and simple. Fans shouldn't have booed him in the first place, but they shouldn't welcome him back with open arms either.

Overall a very good article and explains exactly why fans should boo and shouldn't boo their own players. It's a shame that fans get carried away sometimes - I was mad as hell at the England fans during Euro qualifying and I believe that if the press and the fans had gotten behind the team and supported them, England would have performed much better and possibly qualified for the Euros.

Oh well...

Football is a business. I work at a large hospital and stop families from losing loved ones......I wouldn't hesitate to move from the area and people I love if I had the chance to make more money saving whoever......whats the @#@#in' difference? We do what we do and we look after our own.
As far as Stevie goes.....the best Liverpool has ever had (and England too for that matter)...... the doctor of the midfield.....the best...THE lad........and besides he could kick the snot out of Barton on a very, nastily, extremely bad day!!!!!!!

Go in to a local pub in Manchester and ask a United fan what they think of Rio Ferdinand. "Great player, proper tw*t though" would almost certainly be a common response.

Whilst I'd say most people appreciate that he changed a lot (but not entirely) I know plenty of reds who still don't have a lot of time for him. I can't even imagine how those United fans would have reacted if it had been Giggs or Scholes holding the club to ransom!

Unlike the previous 2 posters I think this is a good article but don't agree with a lot of it.
The first thing to note is that all players are human, young and easily influenced.
In Gerrard's case it's reasonable to assume that he was possibly making a statement, out of frustration, to get the club to invest more and give him (and Liverpool) a better chance of success. Regarding the wage demands, he's worth every penny and is a great pro and a good guy (and I'm a Man Utd fan!)
Rio equally has been worth every penny and then some. The guy has come through that time and shown himself to be Man U thru and thru and I fully agree with Billy Bob's comments. I'd go as far as to say that he's the best defender in Europe at present and Utd would not have won the trophies they won in last 2 seasons without him. It emphasises that there needs to be give and take in these circumstances.
As regards Barry, I'd make the same comments I made regarding Robbie Keane recently. You're approaching your peak, want to maintain your international career and maybe have one last big move in you, and a top 4 club come knocking. If you don't go for it you'll always be wondering what might have been. I can't criticise the guy at all for this.
But you're right about the clubs and the fans. At the end of the day it's all about what's best for each individual stakeholder and everyone will take their position on how it suits them.
There are much more serious cases to be answered by Ronaldo, Adebayor and Drogba.
Now there's three candidates ripe for the boo boys!

This article is absolute tosh.

On Ferdinand - agree he was not held in high esteem by the fans after the missed drugs test and the protracted contract talks after that. But he has turned himself round, been a true world class presence in defence for the last two years (if not more), helped to foster a great team spirit and just signed a new contract recently with the minimum of fuss. He has talked of wanting to become a United legend and I see him spending the rest of his career at the club.

Bottom line is that I expect the overwhelming majority of United fans want to see him as the next captain and you can't get a bigger seal of approval than that.

I only got as far as reading some of the stuff on Steven Gerrard and had to stop. It's so inaccurate and so full of the usual tabloid lies that the whole article is a complete sham.
