If booing a player on the team you support is a sin, then I should be in Dante's inner circle of hell. Lord knows that I've booed and cursed players for failing to perform. But I think it's a reaction of the passion I have for the team I support. Call it fickle, but you can't help but have such emotions when you want your team to win but are witnessing utter failure. It's frustration that builds in and while the behavior of booing on the surface seems counterintuitive, it's a common desire by both fan and team to win that generates this contradictory behavior: supporters booing their own player. But let's be real for one second. To boo is one thing. And it happens a lot. But years back I remember Lazio SS was having a bad streak during the season and members of their own ultra group, the Irrudicible, went to the training ground and threatened violence as a means to "shake things up" for those players who weren't deemed in giving it their all. There was another instance when Dinamo Zagreb's ultra group, The Bad Blue Boys, went to the training ground and physically attacked their own players and took off their shirts in protest that these players weren't fit to don the shirts because of their passive performances. So putting everything into perspective, maybe booing, while emotionally traumatizing for some players, isn't the worst it can possibly get.

I remember Alan Smith when he played for Leeds, even when they relegated he was still a spectacular player, and the one to give hope for fans that relegation will be avoided...

Good article. The boos directed at Smith are acceptable because, as you say, they illustrate the fans' opinion of the player.

However, I am sad to hear that Smith was booed. Such a determined character and a really awesome personality deserves to win Champions Leagues for Manchester United. Too bad he left... I would have liked him at United.

ah well, its all the players' mentality. if they have a strong determination, i guess it won't affect their performance. and alan smith can cope with it. for sure. he's good.

Nice examination of booing! One factor I would add - our perception of booing is entirely dependent on our own team's performance - I'd be shocked to see fans of teams higher up the ladder boo their players, but for clubs that are always in a relegation mire, it's fair game.

I've lived in Philadelphia, in the United States, for my entire life, a city known for its passionate booing of players both on and against our teams. I think there is nothing wrong with booing your own players. If they are dogging it, failing to live up to their billing or big contract or generally struggling, what better way to let them know how frustrated you are with their performance on and off the field than by booing them?

Especially in this age when players are constantly switching teams and chasing money I don't think it's justified to take the attitude that the random and ever-changing collection of men wearing your colors on the field are infallible and forever undeserving of your scorn. As Amrit said, booing doesn't just serve the purpose of demoralizing players, but can also give them the kick in the ass they need to get back on track.

Roger, if you were more perceptive you might be an owner as opposed to a lodger ;-)

There are varying opinions on when its acceptabe and when not to boo.
Two examples, a player or players who are not giving the right amount of effort, could include the team as a whole, boo em , sure !
Alan Smith ? nah ! guys giving 100%
And the fans dont have to be told who`s not putting out and deep down they know when its right and when its just mean spirited.
