Is Tim Sherwood facing the inevitable sack at Spurs?

It seems a weird thing to say, I know. Here’s a guy that has taken over the reins at a club where another Andre Villas-Boas ‘project’ had broken down. Not only has he revitalised the club’s fortunes by getting the enigmatic Adebayor back into the team and firing goals, he’s also got Spurs back to the edge of Champions’ League qualification. But there’s the problem I’m afraidTim Sherwood.

In modern day football however, that sort of thing simply doesn’t cut the mustard. Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy sees a top four finish and the invite to dine at Europe’s table that comes along with it, as a requirement, rather than an aspiration. In the summer laid out a huge investment in players acquisition. Although publicly quoted levels of fees are often distorted, calling over £100million is not stretching thep oint. O course some £80million or so was gained back from the money received for Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid, but with eight new players coming in, and a resultant rise in the wage bill, Levy will be looking for an advancement on the Europa League qualification of last year. Of couse many of those players are not a major part of Sherwood’s planning at the moment, but the terms of the job are the terms of the job, and Levy may not be overly interested in reasons fro failure and excuses. It’s with this in mind that many people seeing today’s press articles regarding Tottenham’s interest in Dutch coach Louis van Gaal will see the dangers ahead for Sherwood.

It was rumoured that the club was interested in van Gaal before they appointed Sherwood, but as boss of the Dutch national side, with a world Cup on the horizon, a ‘job share’ simply wasn’t an option. With the coach likely to leave the post after the Brazil tournament however, he would be free to take up the post if required.

Should Sherwood finish fifth, and with Liverpool to chase for that fourth spot in exhilarating form, it would seem the likely outcome at the moment, losing his job would be a harsh judgement. This however is the way of the game today, and if he wishes to keep his position long term, Tim Sherwood will know it’s Champions’ League or bust!

Football is a game of passions and opinions. If you’re a fan, it’s both your boon and your bane; the drug that you simply cannot live without. Your team will break your heart, make you despair and swear that you’ll give them up. Like some lovestruck fool ensnared by a femme fatale however, you’ll be back again next week. You know it. They know it. Just accept it and embrace it. The lows are bad, but oh, those highs….. Now in my sixth decade, I’ve been a football fan for over fifty years and a Chelsea fan for every one of them. I hold FA Coaching badges and have been a member of the FA Coaches Association for over 15 years, working with numerous teams of varying age and ability levels; it’s the next best thing to playing. That said, I still regularly don the guise of the ‘Panther’, and keep goal for our company team. I’ve written a number of articles focusing on Spanish Football for a different website, and welcome this opportunity to “call it as I see it, without fear or favour” about our game. As I said, football is a game of passions and opinions, so agree or disagree with what I write as you see fit, I’ll passionately tell you my opinion, you tell me yours.
