Arsenal have opened contract talks with Theo Walcott over a new contract, as Arsene Wenger wants to keep him at the club for the peek years of his career.

It seems like Arsenal have learnt their lessons from past. At one point of time there was a genuine fear that the England international would leave the club for free amidst strong interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, Arsenal fans breathed a sigh of relief as Walcott signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal worth £90,000 a week in January, 2013.

“It is never an easy job with him,” Wenger said as quoted by The Times. “We are starting to sit down with him. I think he has one and a half years to go in December. It’s his best years now so hopefully we can profit from that. He’s 25 now so his next years should be his peak.”

In recent years, Arsenal have seen the departures of top players like Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie, and the club seem to have rectified that mistake by securing long term deals for the core group of young players like Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey.

The 25-year-0ld winger made his comeback after ten months absence with cruciate knee ligament damage as a late substitute in the 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday. He is expected to play some part in the Champions League tie at home to Anderlecht on Tuesday.
