The Transfer Lens – Pepe to Manchester City? Yarmolenko to Liverpool?

The Transfer Lens – Pepe to Manchester City? Yarmolenko to Liverpool?

Still no sign of Juan Mata today as the month’s biggest transfer continues to procrastinate something rotten!

Manchester United fans continue to haunt the social networks, desperate for an inkling into what’s going on; while Chelsea fans continue to lament the impending loss of one of their truly great players from the last decade.

Once again, the Transfer Lens is here to distract for the time being. Today Saikat and I tackle two rumours, the first being Manchester City’s apparent £25m bid for Portuguese defender Pepe; while Liverpool are gearing up to swoop for alternative targets to the Chelsea-bound Mohamed Salah.

1. Pepe to Manchester City?

According to the Daily Star, Manchester City have had a £25m bid for Real Madrid defender Pepe rejected by the Spanish giants.

City defender Joleon Lescott is perennially linked with an exit from the club, and if reports are to be believed, Manuel Pellegrini is wasting no time in finding a replacement.

While the City attack continue to devastate Premier League defences, there have been real doubts over the abilities of their defence, and it is an area of growing concern for Pellegrini.

Pepe has continued to be a real focal point for Madrid this season, and is still considered to be one of the world’s best centre back performers.

Tom’s Verdict:

Pepe is a really excellent defender, and partnered with Vincent Kompany at the back, City would be as close to impregnable as you can get!

But considering that Real hold him in such high regard, and that his contract still has two years to run, I can’t see this happening.

A good thing perhaps, as City should concentrate on nurturing Matija Nastasic, who looks a real talent, and would drop down the pecking order if Pepe were to arrive.

2. Andriy Yarmolenko to Liverpool?

With primary target Mohamed Salah looking very likely to complete a move to rivals Chelsea in the coming days, Liverpool have reportedly switched their attention to alternative attacking options in the market, with Dynamo Kiev flyer Andriy Yarmolenko one such alternative.

It is not the first time Liverpool have had to consider alternatives, as the Salah move had looked all but dead earlier on the month due to Basel’s initial unwillingness to negotiate.

This is where the first links to Yarmolenko appeared in the Daily Mail (report via the Independent), and now Brendan Rodgers may be looking to rekindle said interest in the Ukrainian once more, with Salah now out of reach.

The 24-year-old Yarmolenko is very highly rated in Ukraine, and is valued between £15-£20m. Yet with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season, there may well be room to negotiate the price down.

Used anywhere along the attacking midfield row, and most recently as a striker, Yarmolenko has reached double-figures in each of the last three seasons, and already has 15 goals from 24 games this season.

Saikat’s Verdict:

Yarmolenko would be be a brilliant signing for the Reds.

He is a very talented player and would improve the squad, no doubt. But after what happened with Salah and Chelsea, I find myself quite skeptical about whether Liverpool are serious about finding proper targets and, most importantly, landing them.

  1. Never ceases to amaze me how ignorant most footie supporters are !
FSG will have given BR a figure (lets say 25 mill)that cud be spent in Jan and anyone with a brain can determine that midfield is our achiles heel (defence has massive number of injuries but will be resolved and added to with Wisdom and perhaps Robinson next season).
Salah is a “one for the future” type player (who wud probably compete with Raheem) and BR won’t pay more than that which would also allow for a “starting” 15mill midfielder to come in Jan if we can get it over the line.
Remember, only the 2 plastic teams have a bottomless pit of money .
    Engage brain eh !!!!!

  2. Am totally disappointed by the way my team liverpool is losing out on players they want to sign. This leaves me absolutely un sure as to whether we are tittle contenders or mere challengers.

  3. Like I siad earlier that the problem with liverpool is these uncertain transfer we’ve being passing through and other rivals getting above us to get them is not devastating can’t belief a big club like liverpool seeking for the best hinding when it comes to spending. Now salah gone. The next target is yarmolenko.. What give us the impression that anoda big rival will not snatch him again as usual, when liverpool whould be waiting for consideration.. It uncalled for now.. It high time liverpool begins to get what is needed when they target them.. If not going back is the next because we have a lot to do to be able make the top four these season

  4. Rodgers if your not ready to sign player tell us the fans of the club than this ur procrastination, which made sallah go to chelsea and now y have gone to player for us and stop dribbuling cus if we fail to reach top for consider urself fired.

    • Why blame Rodgers when it’s FSG that ultimately makes the decisions on the buying and selling of players??

It irks me a lot when FSG refuses to plonk down a bit more money for great players who can help Liverpool cement Champions League position. I bet Rodgers is as frustrated as you are right now.

  5. BR is too doll in handling LFC transfers thats why Chelsea hijack Salah from us. Pls let him move fast and get us Yarmolenko, we dont want stories again.

  6. If we are to challenge for the top four finish this year, we need 4 good players. Left back, Right back, Holding midfida and an Attacker with creativity. All to come in these jenuary window.

  7. Brendan Rodgers and the transfer committee seemed not to be serious, its time lfc bids for quality players and wrap up the deal b4 someone come from d blues and snatch d deal. Is there no fund or is Rodgers doubting the abilities of transfer targets,he should get us a defensive midfielder and an attacking player b4 d window slam shut and stop perambulating, cos no one will spare Rodgers the sack if wè fail to make top 4 and Suarez leaves.

  8. Liverpool don’t want to spend money, so they bid for players and make little effort to close deals and are outbid by rivals, thus trying to trick the fans into thinking they are making an effort.

  9. Just get yamelenco better suited to premier leauge
Much more phishical and has better all round. Work
Rate also better goal record than Salah then get m’villa
And we will scare chelskie no end go get em Brendan

  10. We need to stop kidding ourselves br isnt going to sign anyone.our valuation of players is far less then wot there clubs value them at and wen we do seem to have a deal insight it goes wrong so in my view its down to a poor transfer commitee ie ian ayre and has already stated that he isnt gonna buy squad players so to me he wants a first team starter and like i said we wont pay the sort of money required for that
