Great article, well balanced showing the possibilities of all for teams clinching 4th. I think that the following match with City and Everton could go a long way to deciding the finishing spot, with city having momentum to go on and everton pulling away from them. Villa are dangerous and a quality side, shown by Capello choosing 5 villa players. But i can't see them taking 4th or even 5th, and i think it will go down to the wire between Everton, City and Liverpool, with Everton nicking 4th, Liverpool 5th, City 6th and Villa 7th.

come on villa!im a huge fan of martin o neill and i really like the way they play.the pacy wing play is my kind of game.their squad is the obvious drawback but if they get lucky with injuries then champions league football could be a very realistic possibility

Good article!
Based on quality of squad it should be Liverpool but they need to sort things out quickly.
It's interesting to consider the 4 managers of the clubs highlighted.

Moyes has done brilliantly with Everton when you consider the money he has had available. He is slowly building a great reputation as a manager.

O'Neill's pedigree is unquestioned and with some financial backing he is now starting to deliever at Villa. An intelligent manager, I can only see Villa improving as long as he is at the helm.

The much maligned Ericksson has bags of experience and success behind him and has shown his class very quickly at City.

Benitez on the other hand is going backwards in my view. The blind loyalty of the Liverpool fans cannot hide the fact that he is not delivering results.

It may be a season too soon for Villa and City. I think Everton are a real chance for 4th but if Liverpool don't take 4th place, and assuming they don't win the CL, it will be a disaster financially for them with the investment in the new stadium coming-up.

It's either Liverpool or it's a taxi for Mr Benitez!

I agree with Andrei. If Everton manage this ACN period without any major hiccups, I expect them to end up at fourth which would be deserving for the club and will show Newcastle the results of backing a manager.
A particular weakness which Everton have displayed in a few games of late has been their poor defense against long balls .. Cole, Eduardo, etc.
And looking at Villa, I would also vote for Martin to be the next manager at Old Trafford. His teams play good football with pace down the wings & a sturdy midfield. Amongst the four, Villa are the most exciting team to watch at the moment.

Maybe not Luis Fabiano after all...seems he does not want to leave Sevilla at this stage.

Personally agree with you Andrei on Everton, 15 wins from 21 says it all. I thought they might struggle a little when they lost Yobo and Yakubu but its only been in the cups that they have recently.

I like Villa a lot this season, bags of pace and a massive threat from set-pieces. It's so good to see training ground routines paying off. Most of all though, quality young English talent in Young, Agbonlahor & Reo-Coker.

Who knows what the rest of Liverpool's season has in store, especially if they exit the CL.

It's tough to seperate these teams though, City need to build on the Newcastle away win for a start but look out for them signing Luis Fabiano perhaps!

My feeling is Everton at the moment, Moyes did it in 2005 and knows what's required.

Everton, I think, looks strongest from the four you mentioned. Liverpool have been disastrous at times, to say the least. Man City are losing mometum and do not look likely to bounce back.

As for Aston Villa, if they play more often like the didy against Arsenal or Chelsea earlier in the season, they will do really well. A small squad is no reason to worry so long as the manager knows wht he is doing. It will be nice to have O'Neill at Old Trafford once Ferguson retires. That is how well I think he is doing.

Come the end of the season, I think that Liverpool will pinch Everton to fourth spot much like Arsenal did to Tottenham a couple of years ago.

There is also the fact that both Liverpool and Everton compete in the Champion's League and UEFA Cup respectively to consider. City and Villa will have fewer games, and I certainly see Villa as contenders for fourth spot. I think Everton will problems in the coming months. Liverpool will have the squad to claim the fourth spot even with Champion's League starting up again (they'll have a hard time getting past Inter in the nezt round though), but their problems are internal.

City are a conundrum this season. They are close to the top, but still they were demolished by Chelsea (6-0), which is not exactly a sign of top-4 class. But still they are good at home, which is so important to win fourth spot.

To me, it looks like Liverpool will claim fourth spot well chased by Villa and City.
