Age isn't a factor when talking about performance. WE have a fantastic side and are capable of winning the PL this year. However, where age does become a factor is when we pay these 27-32 yearolds. They will cost considerably more than younger players. That's the only argument i can think of against the purchase experienced players

matic, sturridge, mikel, mancienne, di santo, kakuta, stoch and rajkovic are all young players that will slowly come through.

Chelsea's squad doesnt rely on massively speedy players. Playes liked drogba, lampard, ballack still have a good couple of years of first team football left.

The defenders a still quite young and have 4-5 years of left easy(cept maybe carvalho).

The rest of the players are in their prime and have 2-3 years left easy.
Players like lampard can last ages, look at scholes as a good example. Lampard rarely does huge speedy sprints and takes on defenders, he uses intelligence and speed. Drogba might cack it sooner then later because his knees seem to be giving way and anelka will lose speed but he is a better striker the many in the EPL anyway.
Chelsea first team choice has an average age of around 26-27, arsenal's first team age is around 25.7 not a huge difference.

Personally, I don't think that age is a factor. If a guy can play he can play. Chelsea has had success with the current squad despite the age of the squad. Experience is a key factor in gaining success in Europe.

I don't think anyone has said older players are going to underperform. In fact the easy option for a club is to bring in experienced players. The problem is that is costs. Chelsea can afford to spend big on the likes of Shevchenko, Anelka, Makalele knowing that they'll only get a few years of service for the money. I think when SAF said that Berbatov would be the last big price, over 26 player he was just being financially prudent. He will spend big on a Ferdinand or Rooney like he did on Keane and Pallister because he knows he can get plenty of years for his money.

In fact the problem these days is that it's hard to win the league with young players as Arsene Wenger will tell you. I reckon Alan Hansen's comment applies these days. The difficult job is to bring in (cheap) young players and maintain a winning team until they peak at 25 or older.

i agree with all your points, but surely only an idiot would argue that chelsea are too old. i think this will be their last chance for a real push, after which arsenal and man u will be the main contenders (in my opinion), unless chelsea can get a few new signings to slowly fill in for the ageing members of the squad. it'll take a few years of transition though, so this year and perhaps the year after is chelsea's last chance to have a real crack at titles. the way i see it they have more talent than any other club at this point in time, so they should be favourites for the title.

I agree but I think you're being a bit over sensitive. Some fans use the age thing to try and put down Chelsea but it's unfounded as you point out and most don't really believe what they say.

I haven't seen many people write Chelsea off though. They're favourites with nearly all the bookies, were tipped by the majority of pundits and neutrals, and also by many rival 'Top 4' fans...me included.

I think they'll win it this year and, right now, experience and team understanding trumps age all day long for this Chelsea squad.
