Perhaps this is why it takes so long to become a great soccer nation, and perhaps longer the bigger the nation. We keep looking elsewhere for guidance on how to play the game and have yet to develop our own national style of play.

I fear until we develop a cohesive style, US results will be a crap-shoot. We have young players today with the potential, but what is the American style?

Really, this could be dreamt up from scratch right now completely aside from what our current players can do. How does the US character approach soccer in a winning way? Perhaps I will suggest some ideas after I have a bit more eggnog...

I normally don't post but that article was trash. It was all over the place. You wanted to talk about tactics or this so called "non-style" but never mentioned anything about what defines this tactical approach. And don't just tell me, "well there is no style at all", because no team walks onto the pitch without a tactical plan. You then lead into some long rant about soccer's impact on the world, completely straying from the point of the article. And shouldn't the departure of one of MLS' executives to a top European club be a sign of the progress the lead has made rather than a harbinger of doom. The fact that a successful MLS exec is desired by the upper echelons of football is a indicator that his work on our "insignificant" league must be of some considerable merit.

Your mention of homogeneity in a team is slightly bizarre. America is a country of immigrants. Desiring a racially homogeneous strikes me as at least xenophobic, if not racist. Also, it is interesting that Spain is used as the first example of a "homogeneous" team considering the large degree of regional difference in Spain. If you ask a person from Catalonia they will tell you that they are Catalan, not Spanish.

Wow! I agree with some parts, however, the "non-style" of the National Team is a result of our culture and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A style does not guarantee victory. Like or not we are melting pot in America, in my opinion it makes us greater, it translates to soccer too. Who would have believed that we have the talent pool of young players like we do now and that Mexico(who has not won anything with more than a 100 years of history)has to respect us because for so long they have been claiming to be giants. The problem is that we are trying to figure out our identity so we can move on to the next level and join the greats but that takes time and we are merely teenagers in our history. Our development took off with the birth of MLS. We will keep sending players overseas and our league will progress slowly, that's our future for now. I think the underdog mentality has and will do us well, but when we mature it will be a positive for the soccer community. There are many things wrong with our country and our soccer, but other countries have them as well. I guess that I'm not as pesimistic about it.
