Actually, I thought really hard on it... and I came with a solution (which I find to be a glorious one.)

I think 2 revamp the competition prestige , the FA (which is really crap nowadays, even more crap than FIFA n UEFA ) should change the prize given to the winners.

I mean if cardiff do win the fa cup, what use will their being in the uefa cup be to their substained growth.

Instead I propose the following:

Barclays Premier League team winner: Uefa place the next year, x amount of money.

Coca-Cola Championship team winner: Automatic progression 2 premier league( satisfying position in the league), 1.5x immediate money, 0.2x money for 3 years.

Other lower English leagues team winner:Automatic progression 2 immediate upper league, 2x money, 0.3x money for 5 years.

Of course, this means that a 4th team might be relegated but the FA cup will regain lost prestige- people will fight with their souls to win it.... And, it is very much better than the 39th league game in the BPL...

And, why not: cash prizes for the highest scoring team or best taken goals? That said, I'm going to bed...

Brian - thank you for putting my thoughts into words.

One way of increasing the FA Cup's importance would be give it media coverage regardless of who's playing. If focusing on the big names doesn't grab attention, focus on their backstories and local history to get attention.

Of course, we could always restrict the league cup to the lower leagues or scrap it all together.

The problem with the FA Cup at this point is that we all complain when the tournament is dominated by the big four and say we want to see underdogs and upsets. Then when we get underdogs and upsets, we complain that their play is boring and don't watch.

I'd love to see the tournament regain its former importance, but it's hard to see how it can when the only final that would satisfy fans and the media would be between two Blue Square South teams who somehow managed to sign Torres and Ronaldo three days before the match.

Nice article, Graham. I have to say though, in my opinion, that it's all relative. My nephew is exactly like your son in some ways but there must have been 14-year-olds at Oakwell and Anfield who are erroneous to the notion.

Good piece. I'm increasingly meeting people who only support the big four, despite having no connection whatsoever to the place, and view any match without them in (give or take the odd game with one of the bigger names in the Premier League - Spurs, Everton, Villa) as a waste of time, and that the Big Four should stroll to victory against any other team.

Personally, I think this year's FA Cup has been brilliant and has reminded me why I love football - the unpredictability of it all. Plus the Premier League, despite having the usual suspects in place at the top - has still be entertaining and exhilarating. Think Spurs' draw with Chelski, Boro taking points of Arsenal and Man United, and other unexpected results.

I'm doing my best to try and ensure any footballing friends get to experience a non-league game at some point, if only to see the contrast, experience the banter, and try something different. My Arsenal supporting flatmate found the terraces at Histon to be an 'experience', if nothing else.
