I hear what you're saying about it not adressing your problem. BUT, if you don't pay the money, and Juventus - or us - signs him, your team will now sit with NEW problems that need to be taken care of. The major one being Gerard not being able to play to his strenghts.
So, because he is a loanee, you should actually view that as a problem area too (one that 18m will address).

Thanks for the comments.

Perhaps i should have been a bit clearer concerning Mascherano, I am a big fan of his, as i stated in the piece he has been arguably our best player this season. The worry i have is that this is another 18m that the owners can point to, and it doesnt actually solve a massive problem (ie the lack of quality wingers).

if benitez will have more funds to spend in the summer then mascherano will be a massive asset, but extra funds are not guaranteed, and i think benayoun, kewell & pennant are more urgently in need of an upgrade.

Good article, i agree with most of the points, especially regarding the wingers, its the one area of the team that needs vast improvement.

Have to agree with most of the other posts about Mascherano though, for me he's probably the best defensive midfielder in the game today and easily worth the £18m

Very good article.

I just disagree with the thinking about £18m being too much for Mascherano. I think that is a very good price for someone that is already proven to fit into the team and has been proven to be consistent. Especially if you consider alternatives in that position (Hargreaves - not played enough games - due to injury - to really justify the similiar amount, Carrick - no consistency at the moment). I only used these 2 examples because of the similiar price-range. Another midfielder is not guarenteed to settle (quickly).
I would say, pay the money for Masch, and start building from your solid midfield. Get the other Argie from Madrid, and while you're at it, get RVN as well to partner your world-class striker (or monitor Villa's progress in the premier). IMO, the squad should be more than capable then.

Good article. It's been interesting to see the debate switch very quickly from vilifying the owners to really starting to question the quality of the players and what Benitez is doing.

Interesting to look at what Liverpool fans are now saying about certain players while referring back to an article I wrote in early November (and some of the responses).

Sorry, off the subject,

'Arsene Wenger rarely makes mistakes when he allows players to leave- David Bentley excluded-.....'

Not true. Bentley is nowhere near good enough to knock Hleb or Rosicky out of our side and the same was true even more so when Pires and Ljungberg were at the club. Just thought I'd point that out.

Get rid of the whole squad, all are em are useless except for Torres. Get rid of the manager...all his rotation policies are theories that are not proven on the ground and he is tinkling with it for until god knows when...until 2010 when he is sacked? Dont bring the owner issue up as a reason for the poor form...pool was already crumbling before then.

We should now support the initiative to support the fans to buy up the club and start from ground zero all over again.

Masch is a quality destructive midfielder. Alonso has silky passing skills. Gerrard is one of the best box to box midfielders in the world. So the midfield is absolutely fine.

Torres is a world class striker. Reina is a great keeper. The defence is solid if unspectacular.

Really the problem is width. The full backs have limited attacking threat, there are no out and out wingers. So if you win the central midfield battle Liverpool are effectively neutralised and as happened against Man U Torres does not get many chances

I'm not a Liverpool fan but I can't see the sense in persisting with Kuyt. Apart from hard work, what does he bring the team?

Crouch scores almost everytime he plays yet rarely gets a game, and Babel, who may be frustrating but has tremendous ability can't get into the side ahead of Harry Kewell.

I would imagine that Liverpool fans are beginning to pull their hair out.

Rafa needs to play Babel up front with Torres, Kuyt has been terrible.
