Hi im from Peru, i just want to point and i think i speak for the majority of peruvians that neither of our top teams would stand a chance in the premier league, i would even say that they wouldn't even survive in England's 2nd divisiond.

It was a great read Shaunn, i hope you tried ceviche already

oh and sorry if my first comment seemed a little rude. I didn't mean for it to be, and used the wrong words to see a point. My bad.

Well first of all, great read, I enjoyed your analysis of our football league here in Peru. I have to say that although it is true that Universitario de Deportes wouldn't stand a chance in the English league, most Peruvians still believe that our national team is a power-house or will retake its place as a powerhouse in South-American football again. This is due to how we were raised to think about our football because just decades ago, Peru was thought to be one of the strongest teams in South-America behind Brazil and Argentina. Everyone during that time believed that Peru would continue to stay in that position for many generations (like Brazil and Argentina have done), but were disappointed that our "golden age" was so suddenly halted. The factors to why Peruvian football ceased to stay strong are many. Most of them have to do with corruption, money, and bad organization. But my point is, the pride is still there. Peruvians believe that Peru can once again become as strong as Brazil or Argentina in South America.

Hey Charley, peruvians know deep down actually know that Universitario De Deportes wouldn't stand a chance even in English League 1. But we love our teams so we say that. Now, the NT is a whole different story. They have the potential to be a south-american powerhouse again, but the good players that we do have,(at least it feels like)don't try hard enough. If you look at it by which team has the most talent in the Americas. You could say Peru is only behind Arg., Brasil, and probably Uruguay.

I agree with the above post. People from our age-group need to represent (I'm 19 too) and your story is a very refreshing and interesting look at the sociology of soccer beyond the Prem and the other big leagues. Interesting how Peruvians are so nationalistic to believe beyond a doubt that their club team could compete in the Premier league and that their national side has the strength to play with the best in the world. This shows that they are so blinded with their own side that they don't have an objective viewpoint.

Great article. Top notch, and I hope you win.

‘football is a universal language that we all speak with different accents.'

Competing in the soccerlens writing competition,e? Your story is as refreshing as the above quoted sentence..Thumbs up, you could well win it. Hmm, I'm thinking to enter myself... after all you need competition from people of your own age-group(im 19). ;)...This story is perfect,... you should consider a career in professional journalism.
