That funny feeling you get as champions

That funny feeling you get as champions

There’s this movie I really took a liking to. Lord of War. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, if not actually seen it. At one point there’s this Zen-ish aphorism that the narrator spews out. “There are only two great tragedies in life. One is not getting what you want, and the other, is getting it.” Highly inspirational stuff, I assure you. Works better than the famed white snorting powder…

The great tragedies have both taken place in Fergal’s (Ferguson, Alex, Sir) life. He wanted the fame, fortune and glory. He yearned for it. He got it in the great years that were the 90′s. He wanted the CL. He picked it from between Bayern’s teeth in the greatest season yet, result-wise. He wanted more glory, he whooped Wenger’s wrinkled hindside (though took quite a few hits himself in that verbal furore).

Now he wants that second CL. And he isn’t getting it. Look at the way he’s been romping around trying to get the kind of players who’d willingly lay down and die for his dream, with more than a grin and a thank you. (figuratively) Its a funny thing to watch him, chewing gum and all, watching United being decimated by Seedorf, Kaka and co. Really tragic, but funny nonetheless. He’s on fire.

To my mind, that alone is enough for the church to canonize him saying that its a f*cking miracle! I mean, how many fellows other than the ‘Human torch” of the Fantastic Four fame can boast of the same thing?

No, seriously. I think that this summer, despite all the trios floating around on the www’s, Fergie will buy just one main player. It is likely to be Hargreaves, but that is it. Beyond that, its going to be all youth, if anyone at all. For those of you who expect huge names and are waiting with pupils agog, this might come as a delusional statement, but please- hear me out.

Exactly what do you think is amiss with our current squad? Wingbacks? No. Striker? With Rossi waiting in the reserves? I daresay- no. Wingers? Giggs, Ronnie, Richardson, Park, Eagles- Hello! Goalie? Hohoho. The only position that requires attention is that of the Defensive Midfielder. That is it.

In fact, my guess is that Fergie might actually butt out Heinze (no regrets there for my part) and Saha (no regrets there for anybody’s part). He’ll be in a no gain, no loss position yet again financially. Wait. Am I forgetting the bald Frenchman? And we’ve still got the burden of lugging the balding American. and I am not even beginning to talk about any of the Glazers.

Squad depth is one thing, but having a set of no-go players is another. Our reserves deserve a tryout. Rossi is good enough. Pique has no space yet but can work his way up. Bardsley, Evans and Eagles are good to go and can learn a lot if they train with people like the Ginger Ninja. Giggs is old enough to play just one more season. That is about it. And that too in a free role and not stifled by having to cover Evra.

Remember what he did the last time around with a bunch of ‘kids’? My bet is that in the view of sanity and long term planning (not to forget the 600 million quid we still owe somebody someplace) he is going to repeat his little trick and let everyone call his bluff. Read this and weep.

The only major change will probably be the change in the mainstay tactic. I believe we will see a 4231/4411 tactic next season. the striker will be amongst Rossi, Rooney and Smith. The forward/central attacking midfielder will be a free-roled Scholes. He was born for that role . There are few in contemporary football who have his kind of deadly (yet stealthy) ability. The wingers will be pushed up and given a far freer role. Ronnie deserves it- look at his brilliant performances with Portugal. Giggs is capable of destroying oppositions if he doesn’t have to play guard-dog all the time.

The two central midfielders will be Carrick and whoever arrives this summer. Carrick, if supported by another holding midfielder, will surely play better than this season. And that is something! The back four stay pretty much the same. EVDS is still around for the next season.

The experience is there. The young blood is well mixed in. The capability to score and defend are there (except on the wings. That though, has been our bugbear even this season. All three of Milan’s goals started out wide…) I doubt SAF will look any further than this when he can easily use the occasional injury as an opportunity to try out the younger generation.

Logical? If only. The only thing that is playing on my mind as I attempt to rationalize this turn of events is Fergies own whims. If he is planning for the longer term then I am pretty sure this is what will be the outcome at the beginning of September. If, on the other hand, his visceral desire for the CL gets a grip, well, in that case I am quite happy to put it this way- many Reds ‘fans’ will see their wet dreams come true.

A huge spending on experienced and proven (possibly even dusky and ageing) players will be my guess. Either way, I am happy so long as we win. But if the latter case were true, I ,for one, will have a lower opinion of one Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson, god bless him.

    Ok…. interesting read but i dont agree with alot of what ur saying.. yes hargreaves is no1.. and yes he prob would like to go for a 4-2-3-1 to be more effective in europe, accomodating hargreaves and carrick and yes rossi is a great prospect but is still lookin like going out again on loan next year but then beyond that uve got a little carried away with urself. I think he will definately be looking to bolster either or both up front and on the flank.

    Giggs’ is on his last legs, and is only really now a threat from a floating position as oppose to being out on that left flank. richardson is NO cover and im sure fergie has also given up on him too.. i think its agreed that smith, whilst being a good squad player, is no star forward and saha is becoming a little frustrating.

    I expect to see a wide player aswell as another forward coming in, although i do agree that it wont be as big names as made out. Nani is realistic and the though of his pace with ronaldos on the opposite flank is v exciting. up front is anyones guess but it wont be torres, eto’o etc etc… perhaps huntelaar if the price is right…

    Too much faith in the kids, I think. You’re not Wenger or an Arsenal fan in disguise, are you? :P

    I agree that the kids are good for defense and Rossi deserves a run out, but if you’re going to ‘rely’ on Park and Richardson and Fletcher as your backup wingers, and a 33-yr old guy to be your first-choice left-winger, you’re wrong. The league is improving each season and I don’t have as much faith in Giggs and Scholes as I had at the start of this season.

    One winger is a must. You also have to consider the possibility that Ferguson could let one or two players go. They’ll have to be replaced as well, especially if it’s a winger or a striker.

    Heinze hopefully won’t leave. The last three seasons we’ve had problems with cover in our defense. This season we’ve had the players to handle it, and even then we were using midfielders as side backs at a point (better than having to use them for centre backs!).

    I doubt any defender will be let go, not when we’ve finally got the backline covered.

    And we definitely need a left winger, one who’s good enough to be a first-choice.

    Frankly Richardson hasn’t shown much to stay on longer. He needs to be moved on to another club and if Everton are in fact bidding 3 mills for him as some rumours go, then we must place him on the next available jet and wish him luck.

    In defence, we need to hold on to Heinze. Let us not forget that he’s had a horrific injury that he hadn’t quite recovered from for a long time, and it wasn’t for nothing he got voted as the Fans’ player of the season couple of years ago. I’m sure he deserves another season. Surely he’s got to be better than the bald Frenchman, who hasn’t been missed!

    And we need a good winger, the current young crop isn’t good enough to cut it at the Premiership, yet.

    Hey fellas do u honestly think Hargo is worth 18m???
    He had a good performance against Portugal in the WC and then a couple of other good performances after than for England.

    As for his performances with Munich goes i don’t think he was a regular in their team last season and before. Also his performances for them this season(whenever ive seen him) have been really mediocre.
    Infact I rate Barton higher than Hargo albeit his off the field problems…But hey this is my opinion.

    And ya Topic Starter…Are u Arsene in disguise??[:P]

    Hargreaves is worth 18m easily (dexter obviously hasnt watched many BM games to know why OH has won a CL medal and countless championships with BM) but it looks like the board are playing hardball and raising the stakes so Im not sure the Man Utd board/SAF will tolerate it

    We definitely need a DM without a doubt, Carrick has done well but its not his natural game and it deflates his value as an attacking force (remember THE Roma game anyone, to name just one where he excelled) imo

    I think Saha will get shipped out asap and an experienced striker will replace him – along with Rossi to come in also as sub/ backup – whether its Eto’o or someone else Im not sure but hopefully someone of definite quality (please not Defoe or Bent, neither are Man Utd quality imo) preferebly international also to help us especialy in the away games in CL

    Nani I think is a given not only because he wants to come but also it will make CR alot happier also, just to have a close friend in the team to start with.

    I also think this might be what allows Bale to sign as he gets on well with Giggs (and who in footy circles doesnt have ultimate respect for this fabulous advert for a football player).

    Giggs and Scholes have another season maybe two as first choice (maybe longer but its going to be on more rare occasions due to recovery periods possibly requiring longer between games) and we need 1st class cover for Gary also as Wes doesnt really cut it.

    Silvestre and Richardson to go as well as one or two others (cant see Fletcher or OShea going though)

    I keep wanting to post but then this other Hugo gets there first…identify yourself, impostor! Ok or maybe I could just keep my surname there. Ahh.

    I’d be very surprised if United do go ahead and sign a big-name striker. I would like to remind you all of the buzz both before and after the World Cup regarding the various targets that Utd had apparently identified. The amount of speculation was at times extraordinary, and the level of disappointment expressed by United fans on this site similarly so. Now I think Fergie will sign Hargreaves, as expected, he may pursue Nani if he is not forced to pay an exorbitant price, and that’s it in terms of big-money signings. I also think he’ll give Saha one more chance, unless Lyon come in with a significant offer.

    @Dexter,
    Rumours are rumours are rumours. What can I say, this article itself is based on speculation…
    @Ahmed,
    No siree. If Arseh@le were the last team on earth, they still wouldn’t get my affection. But my belief in United began with a generation of kids (no cable tv here before) and nostalgia is a really scary thing… :)
    @Ranter
    Heinze may be good. But that season was, though I regret to say it, a flash in the pan. His marking stinks out wide. I can’t seem to redeem him since that match against germany where he lost the plot completely as a centre half. Oh well, i guess that makes me an unforgiving grudge then… :P
    @Megalon
    Winger? I’m not so sure. In Richardson most of us don’t trust. I agree. But eagles is a good prospect. Give them a chance.
    @Hugo
    Nani is a decent buy. He falls into the young and unproven category. Eto’o im not so sure about. Its all about money, honey, and last I heard, Barcelona know how to pinch pockets.
    @ everyone
    My last word is still the same. I f fergie thinks we ought to plan for the future, then the way forward is the youth team. We have enough star players to form a good ol’ mix. Just give em’ some time. No one these days is born with the initials GB (G-O-D). Not uless you’re looking solely at pricetags from the barca factory.
    As for the quick snip CL trophy, well, if thats a priority over the dominance of the next six years, then who am I to complain?

    By the way, any wagers on tonight’s match? C’mon you guys, I;m sure fergie is fielding the reserves. The first team deserve a rest, and how.
    I’d say well hold Chel$ki to a 1-1.

    Nice articel. It shares a lot of resemblence to the UnitedRant articles.
    What you says makes a lot of sense, but, for this formation to work, we need a lethal finnisher. As much as I love Rooney, I don’t think he is it. I think Rooney will get swapped more and more with Giggs. Giggs is still my hero in the United team, but I have to admit from what I’ve seen of him this season, I think he’s ‘past it’ as a winger.
    I would say OH (even though I still think he is overpriced) and another ‘experienced, proven, possibly oldish and cheap’ striker (either Benni or Berbatov – personally I would have gone for Eto, but SAF want to create his own stars). I think Saha will be sold. Rossi will feature more, Dong possibly on loan for 6 months.

    WHAT DO A PERSON DO NOW?
    The season’s not quite over yet, but I’m already starting to get that “empty” feeling. What do I do over the weekends becuase there will be no football for about 3 months. Damn, this is going to be a long 3-months. I guess now all the transfer bullshit takes over. Can’t we arrange some sort of competition for the transfer window? I can still remember how shit a person feel after the window closes. Perhaps we need some sort of diversion, or our own game to lessen the ‘shock’ and ‘dissapointment’ of this summer’s sighnings.

    Thank you. The compliments are well treasured, I assure you. As for my article sharing resemblences, well, yes. I used to be an avid fan of the Unitedrant blog till they stopped posting somewhere around Jan.
    How about getting Larsson back? Just a suggestion, don’t shoot me… :)
    Also, the boredom is one thing that we’ll all share in common. Could someone pleeez take the trouble to give us an up to date account of the Asia (if any) tour? It’d keep me happy tracking the progress of new trainees.

    I think Larson is a brilliant idea (at least for a year). I think SAF want to focus on the youngsters (Rossi, Dong, perhaps also Campbell). Larson should fit the bill perfectly. Thing is, who will get No. 10? Don’t think he can give it to Larson for a year. Knowing SAF and his traditions, he will want to give it to a Ruud/Mark Hughes type of center forward.
